Since copper ions catalyse the oxidation of nitroxyl anion to nitric oxide, we investigated whether this might explain the vasodilator actions of the nitroxyl generator, Angeli's salt, in rat aorta. Parallel studies were conducted with S-nitroso-N-acetyl-D,L-penicillamine (SNAP), since Cu ions catalyse the liberation of nitric oxide from this compound. Copper sulphate enhanced relaxation to Angeli's salt and SNAP but this resulted from reduced destruction of nitric oxide by superoxide rather than from enhanced generation of nitric oxide, since it was mimicked by superoxide dismutase and by the superoxide dismutase mimetic, MnCl2. Results with the selective Cu2+ chelators, neocuproine and bathocuproine disulfonate, and the Cu2+ chelators, EDTA, cuprizone and diethyldithiocarbamate, confirmed an important role for endogenous copper in mediating relaxation to SNAP but suggested only a minor role for Angeli's salt. Relaxation to Angeli's salt was, however, powerfully blocked by proadifen, suggesting an important role for cytochrome P450.

Objectives: How gaseous signalling molecules affect ion transport processes contributing to the physiological functions of the gastrointestinal tract under hypoxic conditions still needs to be clarified. The objective of the present study was to characterize the impact of gaseous signalling molecules on parameters of colonic ion transport during a hypoxia/reoxygenation cycle and the remaining secretory capacity of the epithelium after such a cycle.
Methods: Short-circuit current (I) and tissue conductance (G) recordings in Ussing chamber experiments were performed on rat colon samples using CORM-2 (putative CO donor; 35 and 350 µM), sodium nitroprusside (NO donor; 100 µM), NaHS (fast HS donor; 10 - 1,000 µM), GYY 4137 (slow HS donor; 50 µM) and Angeli's salt (HNO donor; 100 µM) as donors for gasotransmitters.

Dinitrosyl iron complexes (DNICs) are important physiological derivatives of nitric oxide. These complexes have a wide range of biological activities, with antioxidant and antiradical ones being of particular interest and importance. We studied the interaction between DNICs associated with the dipeptide L-carnosine or serum albumin and prooxidants under conditions mimicking oxidative stress.

Bacillithiol (BSH) replaces glutathione (GSH) as the most prominent low-molecular-weight thiol in many low G + C gram-positive bacteria. BSH plays roles in metal binding, protein/enzyme regulation, detoxification, redox buffering, and bacterial virulence. Given the small amounts of BSH isolated from natural sources and relatively lengthy chemical syntheses, the reactions of BSH with pertinent reactive oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur species remain largely unexplored.

Chagas disease (CD), caused by , is a neglected tropical disease prevalent in Latin America. Infected patients are treated to eliminate the parasite, reduce the cardiomyopathy risk, and interrupt the disease transmission cycle. The World Health Organization recognizes benznidazole (BZ) and nifurtimox as effective drugs for CD treatment.
