Published: February 2001

Nobiletin and 3,5,6,7,8,3',4'-heptamethoxyflavone (HPT), isolated from the peel of Citrus plants, were examined for the anti-tumor-initiating activity on two-stage carcinogenesis of mouse skin tumors induced by a nitric oxide donor, (+/-)-(E)-methyl-2-[(E)-hydroxyimino]-5-nitro-6-methoxy-3-hexenamide, as an initiator and 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate as a promoter. HPT exhibited the remarkable anti-tumor-initiating effect on mouse skin and it suggested the possibility of HPT being a chemopreventive agent against nitric oxide (NO) carcinogenesis.

Most of the food packaging materials used in the market are petroleum-based plastics; such materials are neither biodegradable nor environmentally friendly and require years to decompose. To overcome these problems, biodegradable and edible materials are encouraged to be used because such materials degrade quickly due to the actions of bacteria, fungi, and other environmental effects. The present study examined that starch can be effectively used as raw material to develop biodegradable, edible films.

Article Synopsis
  • Citrus peels, often considered waste, contain valuable coumarins with potential anti-fatness benefits that could be harnessed for new uses.
  • The study analyzed different Citrus limon varieties to extract these coumarins using ethanol and eco-friendly solvents, discovering high concentrations primarily in the outer peel layer.
  • Results showed that certain natural deep eutectic solvents outperformed ethanol in extracting specific coumarins, highlighting the Citrus peel's potential for further valorization through innovative extraction methods.

Citrus peel essential oils (CPEOs) have demonstrated substantial medicinal potential for glioblastoma treatment because of their extensive antitumor effects, low potential for drug resistance, and ability to cross the human blood-brain barrier. In this study, the chemical compositions of five CPEOs were analyzed via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). CCK8 assays were used to evaluate the ability of five CPEOs to inhibit U251 human glioblastoma cells, and XLB and RA were selected for further investigation.

The lack of sufficient flavour in perry represents a barrier to its further industrialization. This study aimed to investigate the effects of glutathione (GSH), β-glucosidase (Glu), and α-L-rhamnosidase (Rha) pretreatments, the fermentation temperature from 16 °C to 28 °C, and the aging time of 1, 2, and 3 years (PA1, PA2, and PA3) on the physicochemical properties, organic acids, and aroma profiles were investigated. The results demonstrated that the synergistic effect of Glu, Rha, and GSH was more effective than their individual or paired applications in enhancing the varietal aromas.

Polymethoxyflavones (PMFs) from citrus peel, including permethoxylated PMFs and hydroxylated PMFs (OH-PMFs), have attracted much attention due to their potential strong biological activities. However, characterization of PMFs through LC-MS analysis was challenged due to numerous substituent positions in flavone. In this study, twelve PMF standards were analyzed by UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS to present fingerprint retro-Diels-Alder (RDA) ions ([B],  A and B(C) associated ions).
