Placement matching: challenges and technical progress.

Subst Use Misuse

Department of Psychiatry, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston 02114, USA.

Published: March 2001

Although it is highly desirable, standardized placement matching for substance use disorders poses challenges due to variability in settings, services, and syndromes; multidimensionality of clinical problems; multiplicity of outcome constructs; and temporal phenomena in the course of recovery. Despite these obstacles, progress is being made in developing patient placement criteria that are comprehensive with adequate reliability, feasibility, and resolution. With these methodological advances, it has been possible to initiate controlled research with placement criteria. The first such studies provide early evidence supporting such criteria and indicate areas for refinement.

Purpose: Osseointegration-associated infections are a critical barrier to widespread implementation of osseointegrated (OI) prosthetics. To address this challenge, a preclinical animal model must exist of the human model to test potential interventions. In this article, we describe a novel rabbit model of OI implant-related infection that can act as a platform for rapid translation and development of therapeutic approaches to combat these uniquely challenging infections.

The Russo-Ukrainian war's prolonged warfare, resource constraints, and extended evacuation times have forced significant adaptations in Ukraine's medical system - including technological advancements and strategic resource placement. This study examined if the Abdominal Aortic and Junctional Tourniquet - Stabilized (AAJT-S) could manage traumatic cardiac arrest (TCA) at forward surgical stabilization sites (FSSS) as an adjunct to damage control surgery. Six patients in severe hypovolemic shock presented at an FSSS during fighting in Bakhmut (July 2022) and Slovyansk (May 2023).
