In northwest and eastern Europe different miospore zonation schemes have been erected for the Famennian rocks, and correlation of these has proved problematical. However, in both regions of Europe Grandispora taxa are common elements in the respective Famennian spore successions, and it appears these taxa may have important intra-continental correlation potential. In order to assess this potential, a C.I.M.P. working group has undertaken a taxonomic study of the Grandispora complex in the Famennian of both regions. Representative material from Belarus, Poland, Germany, Belgium, France and Ireland has been exchanged, and then jointly studied, at four workshop meetings. A consensus of agreement has been reached on the morphological delineation and nomenclature of 13 species of Grandispora, and a description of each taxon is presented. One new species Grandispora tamarae is erected, and six new generic combinations are proposed. The stratigraphic range of each species in both regions is documented and calibrated with the respective conodont zonation schemes. It can be shown that many of the Grandispora species seem to have their first occurrence at similar stratigraphic levels. These new data allow detailed correlations of the Famennian miospore zonation schemes to be proposed.

Kupffer cells determine intrahepatic traffic of PEGylated liposomal doxorubicin.

Nat Commun

July 2024

Department of Pharmacology, School of Basic Medical Sciences & Department of Pharmacy, Shanghai Pudong Hospital & State Key Laboratory of Molecular Engineering of Polymers, Fudan University, Shanghai, 200032, P.R. China.

Article Synopsis
  • Most nanomedicines, like PEGylated liposomal doxorubicin, accumulate mainly in the liver, but understanding their behavior is complex and unclear.
  • In this study, researchers found that Kupffer cells in the liver capture and transport the liposomal doxorubicin to liver cells, which helps the drug accumulate effectively.
  • The work highlights the significant role of Kupffer cells in managing how these liposomal drugs are distributed and eliminated in the liver, giving insights for future nanomedicine development.

Objective: Medial opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO) is successful in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis with medial compartment stenosis and tibial varus deformity, but patella infera is the main complication. This study aims to design a new medial tibial open osteotomy scheme, transtibial tuberosity-high tibial osteotomy (TT-HTO), which can fully protect the patellar tendon insertion. In addition, the area of the osteotomy surface and wedge volume were evaluated in TT-HTO, biplanar distal tibial tuberosity osteotomy (biplanar-DTO), and uniplanar-DTO to evaluate the potential advantages of this technology in bone healing.

Scholars and practitioners have been striving to develop straightforward and effective tools to measure protected area management effectiveness (PAME). UNESCO Biosphere Reserves (BR), with their unique functional and zonation schemes are monitored according to their compulsory 10-year Periodic Review (PR), which is useful for UNESCO's evaluation purposes but lacks comprehensiveness and utility for adaptive management. Based on existing PAME methodologies, we develop and propose the first quantitative tool for the evaluation of BR management effectiveness, that would enhance and complement the currently used qualitative PR report, and serve the rapid evaluation needed for BR managers to monitor, evaluate, and adapt their management approach to achieve the three functions of BRs.

Background: Leptospirosis is among the leading zoonotic causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Knowledge about spatial patterns of diseases and their underlying processes have the potential to guide intervention efforts. However, leptospirosis is often an underreported and misdiagnosed disease and consequently, spatial patterns of the disease remain unclear.

Geomorphically controlled coral distribution in degraded shallow reefs of the Western Caribbean.

PeerJ

January 2023

Biodiversity and Reef Conservation Laboratory, Unidad Académica de Sistemas Arrecifales Instituto de Ciencias de Mar y Limnología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Article Synopsis
  • Coral reef development is shaped by both ecological and geological processes that happen over different timescales, making it tough to evaluate how ecological changes affect the geological structure of reefs.
  • The decline in coral cover over the past 50 years has negatively impacted reef functions, but it’s unclear how this will affect the long-term growth and stability of the reefs due to a lack of detailed historical records.
  • A study of coral communities in Mesoamerican reefs shows distinct patterns in species distribution related to depth, highlighting the influence of external factors on coral diversity and suggesting that current reef systems are still recovering from past disturbances.
