A striking characteristic of the centromeric heterochromatin of Drosophila melanogaster is that each chromosome carries different satellite DNA sequences. Here we show that while the major component of the 1.688 satellite DNA family expands across the centromere of the X chromosome the rest of the minor variants are located at pericentromeric positions in the large autosomes. Immunostaining of prometaphase chromosomes with the kinetocore-specific anti-BUB1 antibody reveals the transient presence of this centromeric protein in all the regions containing the 1.688 satellite.

Aircraft observations have revealed ubiquitous new particle formation in the tropical upper troposphere over the Amazon and the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Although the vapours involved remain unknown, recent satellite observations have revealed surprisingly high night-time isoprene mixing ratios of up to 1 part per billion by volume (ppbv) in the tropical upper troposphere. Here, in experiments performed with the CERN CLOUD (Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets) chamber, we report new particle formation initiated by the reaction of hydroxyl radicals with isoprene at upper-tropospheric temperatures of -30 °C and -50 °C.

Greatly improving the sensitivity and detection range of lateral flow immunoassays (LFAs) by at least 100 times without using additional instruments remains challenging. Herein, we develop a three-dimensional (3D) film-like nanozyme (GO-Pt-AuPt) by ordered assembly of one layer of 30 nm Pt nanoparticles (NPs) and one layer of small Au@Pt satellites (5 nm) onto a two-dimensional (2D) graphene oxide (GO) nanofilm, in which GO greatly increased the interface area and stability of the nanozyme whereas Pt and Au@Pt NPs synergistically enhanced colorimetric/catalytic activities. The grafting of outer Au@Pt satellites converted the 2D nanofilm into a 3D flexible nanozyme with numerous catalytic sites for enzymatic deposition signal amplification and binding sites for target capture.

Opportunistic sensors are increasingly used for rainfall measurement. However, their raw data are collected by a variety of systems that are often not primarily intended for rainfall monitoring, resulting in a plethora of different data formats and a lack of common standards. This hinders the sharing of opportunistic sensing (OS) data, their automated processing, and, at the end, their practical usage and integration into standard observation systems.

In this paper, we investigate a user pairing problem in power domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme-aided satellite networks. In the considered scenario, different satellite applications are assumed with various delay quality-of-service (QoS) requirements, and the concept of effective capacity is employed to characterize the effect of delay QoS limitations on achieved performance. Based on this, our objective was to select users to form a NOMA user pair and utilize resource efficiently.

It has been proposed that mechanosensitive Piezo1 channels trigger migraine pain in trigeminal nociceptive neurons, but the mechanosensitivity of satellite glial cells (SGCs) supporting neuronal sensitization has not been tested before. Moreover, tools to monitor previous Piezo1 activation are not available. Therefore, by using live calcium imaging with Fluo-4 AM and labeling with FM1-43 dye, we explored a new strategy to identify Piezo channels' activity in mouse trigeminal neurons, SGCs, and isolated meninges.
