Aim: Determination of the prevalence of spondylarthropathies (SAP) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) among Finno-Ugrian population of Russia.

Materials And Methods: A one stage expedition trial was made of representative samples of Mordovian and Mari populations including 1312 citizens aged over 14 years.

Results: Incidence rate of SAP among Mordovian and Mari examinees was 0.7 and 0.2%, respectively, ankylosing spondylitis being most frequent finding. RA occurred in 2.5 and 0.6%, respectively. All the RA cases were females without family history of this disease.

Conclusion: SAP and RA prevalence among Mordovian and Mari populations was high but their course is more favorable than among other population of Russia.

[A study of the insertion-deletion polymorphism of the serotonin transporter gene in populations from the Volga-Ural region].

April 2002

Department of Biochemistry and Genetics, Ufa Research Center, Russian Academy of Sciences, Ufa, 450054 Bashkortostan, Russia.

The insertion-deletion polymorphism of the serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4) was studied using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in eight populations from the Volga-Ural region (the Bashkir, Chuvash, Tatar, Udmurt, Mari, Mordovian, and Komi populations and the population of Russians living in the Arkhangel's skii raion of Bashkortostan). For this polymorphic system, the pattern of distribution of main population parameters was established in the region studied. Depending on population ethnicity, specific trends were revealed in the pattern of frequencies of alleles and genotypes of gene SLC6A4.

The restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of the major noncoding region of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was studied in the Bashkir (N = 217), Tatar (N = 57), Chuvash (N = 44), Mari (N = 52), Mordovian (N = 55), Udmurt (N = 62), and Komi (N = 45) populations. Of seven polymorphic AvaII, BamHI, EcoRV, KpnI, and RsaI restriction sites, five were found in Bashkirs and Tatars, and four were found in each of the other populations. In total, 13 mitotypes were detected, and only three of them were common to all populations from the Volga-Ural region.

Distributions and gametic associations of HLA I antigens were studied in two Finno-Ugrian populations of Russia: Mordovians (300 subjects, including 148 Erzyas and 152 Mokshas) and Maris (137 subjects). Regarding the Mordovian population, Erzya and Moksh subpopulations significantly differed from each other only in the frequency of the A9 antigen. However, the Mari and Mordovian populations differed from each other considerably.
