The leading Ruelle resonances of typical chaotic maps, the perturbed cat map and the standard map, are calculated by variation. It is found that, excluding the resonance associated with the invariant density, the next subleading resonances are, approximately, the roots of the equation z(4)=gamma, where gamma is a positive number that characterizes the amount of stochasticity of the map. The results are verified by numerical computations, and the implications to the form factor of the corresponding quantum maps are discussed.

Hyperventilation syndrome (HVS) is a frequent disorder of which the etiology is unclear. Diagnosis is based on the ruling out of organic disease and, more positively, on results of the Nijmegen questionnaire, reproduction of symptoms during the hyperventilation provocation test (HPVT), and detected hypocapnia. Treatment is based on targeted respiratory physiotherapy consisting in voluntary hypoventilation and instructions to the patient on regular respiratory exercise over an appreciable period of time.

Over the last several decades, improvements in breast cancer treatment have contributed to increased cure rates for women diagnosed with this malignancy. Consequently, great importance should be paid to the long-term side effects of systemic therapies. For young women (defined as per guideline ≤40 years at diagnosis) who undergo chemotherapy, one of the most impactful side effects on their quality of life is premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) leading to fertility-related problems and the side effects of early menopause.

The European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) exhibits female-biased sexual size dimorphism (SSD) early in development. New tagging techniques provide the opportunity to monitor individual sex-related growth during the post-larval and juvenile stages. We produced an experimental population through artificial fertilization and followed a rearing-temperature protocol (~16°C from hatching to 112 days post-hatching, dph; ~20°C from 117 to 358 dph) targeting a roughly balanced sex ratio.
