Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify predictors of functional outcome after acute stroke inpatient rehabilitation using raw Functional Independence Measure (FIM) total scores.

Design: Multivariate analysis was performed on data collected retrospectively from stroke rehabilitation patients. Six independent variables were obtained from patients' medical records.

Results: The FIM total scores at the time of discharge from the hospital correlated strongly with FIM total scores at the time of admission to the hospital and correlated negatively with age and OAI using the Spearman's rank correlation method. The FIM total scores at the time of hospital admission were the best predictor of FIM total scores at the time of discharge from the hospital. However, the nature of the stroke, gender, and LOHS did not correlate with FIM total scores at the time of discharge from the hospital.

Conclusions: Because FIM total scores at the time of hospital admission and discharge are highly correlated, FIM total scores at the time of hospital admission can be used to establish a rehabilitation program, to inform the patient and family about the possibility of recovery, and to assess the amount and quality of care given in the home or discharge placement.

Heterogeneous distribution of PSI and PSII in thick grana in shade chloroplasts is argued to hinder spillover of chlorophyll excitations from PSII to PSI. To examine this dogma, we measured fluorescence induction at 77K at 690 nm (PSII) and 760 nm (mostly PSI) in the leaf discs of Spinacia oleracea, Cucumis sativus and shade tolerant Alocasia odora, grown at high and low light, and quantified their spillover capacities. PSI fluorescence (FI) consists of the intrinsic PSI fluorescence (FIα) and fluorescence caused by excitations spilt over from PSII (FIβ).

Objective: To determine whether regional variations exist in functional outcomes of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) admitted to inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs) across the United States, while controlling for demographic and clinical variables.

Setting: Inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs) across 4 U.S.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Functional Independence: Impact on Survival in Patients with Fibrotic Interstitial Lung Disease or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

Respir Med

December 2024

Department for Pulmonary Medicine, Allergology and Clinical Immunology, Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, University of Bern, Switzerland; Lung Precision Medicine (LPM), Department for BioMedical Research (DBMR), University of Bern, Switzerland. Electronic address:

Background: Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) aims to improve patients' functioning in interstitial lung disease (ILD) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The impact of change in functional independence during PR on subsequent survival has not been established. We aimed to determine functional independence during PR and its association with survival over three years post-PR.

Introduction/aims: The rising use of disease-modifying therapy is progressively impacting the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in their daily lives. This study aimed to evaluate the changes in HRQoL and independence in children with later-onset SMA receiving longitudinal treatment with nusinersen.

Methods: Forty-nine pediatric patients with later-onset SMA (symptom onset after 6 months of age) and their caregivers were enrolled.
