Atrazine (1,000 ppm), endosulfan (1 ppm) or butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) (1,000 ppm) added to a semi-synthetic diet of Orthosia gothica for 2 days in the last instar did not change the soft tissue cytosolic glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities towards 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (CDNB), 1,2-dichloro-4-nitrobenzene (DCNB) and cumene hydroperoxide (CU). However, all three pesticides changed the GST subunit composition compared with the control as observed by reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography of the isozymes purified by glutathione-Sepharose affinity chromatography. The changes seem to have occurred mainly in the GST class 2 subunit. There is no obvious explanation for the changes, which may be a result of interactions between xenobiotic and GST in the cytosol as well as changes in the level of regulation of synthesis. However, the observation added to our knowledge of the processes involved when pesticides are degraded by GSTs in vivo.

Lipophilic antioxidants in edible oils: Mechanisms, applications and interactions.

Food Res Int

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Food Science and Resources, School of Food Science and Technology, National Engineering Research Center for Functional Food, National Engineering Research Center of Cereal Fermentation and Food Biomanufacturing, Collaborative Innovation Center of Food Safety and Quality Control in Jiangsu Province, Jiangnan University, 1800 Lihu Road, Wuxi, Jiangsu 214122, People's Republic of China. Electronic address:

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) in edible oils are crucial for human nutrition. However, their high unsaturation renders edible oils susceptible to oxidation during storage and processing. The addition of lipophilic antioxidants is an effective strategy to inhibit oxidation and safeguard the nutritional integrity of edible oils.

Article Synopsis
  • A study explored the antioxidant activity of six hydrazone compounds against HOO˙ and CHOO˙ radicals using DFT methods, focusing on three mechanisms: HAT, SETPT, and SPLET.
  • Compound 2 was found to have the highest scavenging rate constants for both radicals, with significant activity in the gas phase as well as in aqueous solutions.
  • Overall, compound 2 demonstrates potential as an effective antioxidant, outperforming some commonly known antioxidants in scavenging activities within physiological environments.

This study investigates the integration of Broadband Cavity Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy (BBCEAS) with High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to detect synthetic antioxidants; BHA, BHT, and TBHQ in the deep-UV region below 300 nm. The research addresses the need for more sensitive and cost-effective detection methods in HPLC systems, particularly for low analyte concentrations, by exploring BBCEAS as a superior alternative to conventional detectors that often fall short in sensitivity. The sensitivity of the HPLC-BBCEAS system is assessed by calculating the minimum detectable change in the absorption coefficient (αmin) and comparing with those obtained using conventional HPLC and single-wavelength HPLC-CRDS methods.

School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nanjing Tech University, No. 30, South Puzhu Road, Nanjing 211816, China. Electronic address:

In this study, the inclusion complex was prepared with butyl hydroxyanisole (BHA) as the functional substance and 2-hydroxypropyl beta-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) as the main molecule by ultrasound mediation. The inclusion complex was mixed with polycaprolactone (PCL)/polylactic acid (PLA), and nanofiber films loaded with different concentrations of BHA/HP-β-CD inclusion complex were prepared by electrospinning for fruit preservation. The scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy characterization results showed that HP-β-CD successfully embedded BHA in the cavity.
