[Convulsions and epileptic syndromes of the newborn infant. Forms of presentation, study and treatment protocols].

Rev Neurol

Servicio de Neurología, Unitat Integrada Hospital Sant Joan de Déu-Clínic, Universitat de Barcelona, España.

Published: December 2000

Objectives: To review the different forms of presentation of convulsions and epilepsies in the newborn, and to establish a protocol for diagnosis and treatment.

Patients And Methods: To achieve this we reviewed the literature and our own series over the past 15 years of 179 newborn babies with convulsions.

Results And Conclusions: We present the results of the etiological analysis of neonatal convulsions. Then we discuss a protocol for diagnosis and treatment of this condition, with particular emphasis on diagnostic methods according to their complexity. The different therapeutic options are considered using a protocol for treatment that starts with the use of phenobarbital, pyridoxine, biotin, folinic acid, intravenous sodium valproate, diphenylhydantoin, clonazepam, lidocaine + phenobarbital and if the convulsions persist thipentone. Finally, we analyze the duration of treatment and emphasise that after discharge from the unit, only convulsions persisting after the neonatal period or accompanied by severe electroencephalographic changes should be treated. Finally we evaluate the high morbi-mortality (48% and 20% respectively) of the neonatal convulsions seen in our series. This is mainly due to the fact that the population studied corresponded to a tertiary level hospital covering a large area with conditions of risk.

Healthcare organizations are reliant on cadres of managers to oversee operations, ensuring the delivery of excellent patient care and accomplishment of institutional missions. These managers obviously must be well versed in the principles of management, but they also must be proficient in leadership. As leadership can take many different forms, healthcare organizations must take care in their associated leadership development efforts to ensure that they have a firm grasp on the precise leadership qualities needed within their given organizations.

Preparation and Adsorption Properties of Sodium Trimetaphosphate Crosslinked Porous Corn Starch.

Biopolymers

March 2025

Guangxi Key Laboratory of Natural Polymer Chemistry and Physics, College of Chemistry and Materials, Nanning Normal University, Nanning, People's Republic of China.

The crosslinked porous corn starch was prepared by two steps: the native corn starch was hydrolyzed by α-amylase and glucoamylase, then the porous corn was crosslinked by sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP). The morphology and size of granules, spherulites, crystal type, molecular structure, swelling properties, thermal stability and adsorption properties of the crosslinked porous starch were investigated. The results indicated that a lot of holes formed in the porous starch, and the particle size of starch granules decreased.

Several neurological conditions, including transient global amnesia (TGA), may present an isolated sudden-onset temporary amnestic symptom. TGA is a benign, self-remitting neurological condition associated with hippocampal dysfunction. Meanwhile, certain other neurological conditions, such as cerebral ischemic stroke and hippocampal epilepsy, require appropriate therapeutic interventions.

Electrical fires pose significant threats to the lives and property safety of people. Although utilizing coatings to impart conductivity and flame retardancy to materials is convenient and reliable, traditional layer-by-layer preparation methods have the limitations of cost, convenience and scalability. Therefore, a single-layer coating that simultaneously imparts excellent conductivity and flame retardancy to materials presents broader application prospects.
