Two cryptic plasmids of two environmental strains of the soil Bacillus mycoides were cloned and sequenced. They are of a small size (3377 and 3476 bp) and carry regions homologous to double- and single-strand origins of replication of rolling-circle replication modules. In addition, both plasmids have ORFs with homologies with Mob and Rep proteins, in the same relative position and orientation. While dso- and sso-like sequences are similar in pBMY1 and pBMYdx, the putative Mob and Rep proteins are not homologous between the two but show similarity with Mob and Rep proteins of different bacterial plasmids.

The potential positive feedback between global aquatic deoxygenation and methane (CH) emission emphasizes the importance of understanding CH cycling under O-limited conditions. Increasing observations for aerobic CH-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) under anoxia have updated the prevailing paradigm that MOB are O-dependent; thus, clarification on the metabolic mechanisms of MOB under anoxia is critical and timely. Here, we mapped the global distribution of MOB under anoxic aquatic zones and summarized four underlying metabolic strategies for MOB under anoxia: (a) forming a consortium with oxygenic microorganisms; (b) self-generation/storage of O by MOB; (c) forming a consortium with non-oxygenic heterotrophic bacteria that use other electron acceptors; and (d) utilizing alternative electron acceptors other than O.

Face ensemble coding is the perceptual ability to create a quick and overall impression of a group of faces, triggering social and behavioral motivations towards other people (approaching friendly people or avoiding an angry mob). Cultural differences in this ability have been reported, such that Easterners are better at face ensemble coding than Westerners are. The underlying mechanism has been attributed to differences in processing styles, with Easterners allocating attention globally, and Westerners focusing on local parts.

Background: Serotonin (5-HT) 5-HT receptor mRNA editing (at five sites, A-E), implicated in neuropsychiatric disorders, including clinical depression, remains unexplored during alcohol abstinence-often accompanied by depressive symptoms.
Methods: We used deep sequencing to investigate 5-HT receptor editing in mice during early ethanol deprivation following prolonged alcohol exposure and mice lacking tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH)2, a key enzyme in central 5-HT production. We also examined Tph2 expression in ethanol-deprived animals using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR).

Immune checkpoint inhibitors have revolutionized cancer treatment but can induce immune-related adverse events including psoriasis. Managing immune-related psoriasis or psoriasis in a cancer setting is challenging with a lack of safety data. We describe three patients receiving interleukin-23 inhibitors to manage psoriasis in an active cancer setting, including one with immune-related psoriasis.

Aerobic methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) play an important role in mitigating methane emissions from paddy fields. In this study, we developed a differential quantification method for the copy number of pmoA genes of type Ia, Ib, and IIa MOB in paddy field soil using chip-based digital PCR. Three probes specific to the pmoA of type Ia, Ib, and IIa MOB worked well in digital PCR quantification when genomic DNA of MOB isolates and PCR-amplified DNA fragments of pmoA were examined as templates.
