Published: June 2000

A patient with anterior apertognathia presented with an unserviceable maxillary removable partial denture. The unique pattern of partial edentulism was treated with a partial overdenture restoration of the bar attachment design. The final prosthesis was stable, well retained, and esthetic, serving as a conservative alternative to a surgical-orthognathic plan of treatment.

March 2024

MD, PhD, Department of Prosthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry, "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, 17-23 Plevnei Street, 010221 Bucharest, Romania.

Introduction: Assessment of the denture plaque can provide a valuable report regarding the oral health of geriatric patients and the oral hygiene habits in this population group. Focusing on the current research gap on this topic in Romania, our research aims to highlight the microbial plaque on the different surfaces and types of removable poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) prostheses to qualitatively evaluate the microbial species, and to assess the combined effect of mechanical and chemical cleaning of dentures on the prosthetic microbiome.

Methods: The prosthetic plaque from four denture wearers was identified with a UV activated fluorescent revealer and digitally photographed.

Purpose: To analyze the distribution of stresses for mandibular Kennedy class I removable partial overdentures submitted to different implant lengths and clasp designs.

Materials And Methods: Twenty-seven heat-cured acrylic resin casts with a uniform soft acrylic layer were constructed from models representing the mandibular Kennedy class I removable partial denture with the first premolars terminal abutment on both sides. The casts were grouped into a control group, group I, and group II with three casts of each for designing a different clasp on the last abutment with Rest, Proximal plate, Aker circumferential (RPA), Rest, Proximal plate, I-bar (RPI), and wrought wire (WW).

The utilization of natural teeth as denture abutments offers a significant advantage in retarding the residual ridge resorption (RRR). This approach distributes stress concentration between the denture-bearing areas and abutment teeth, thereby mitigating issues such as loss of sensory feedback, compromised mastication, and aesthetic concerns. Overdentures, by providing additional support and stability, play a pivotal role in reducing RRR while enhancing stability and retention.
