Clinical course of wound process in the eye was studied in 279 patients with penetrating wounds of different severity. Modern microsurgical and drug treatment of penetrating wounds results in a favorable course in 2/3 (77.4%) of patients, while in the rest 22.6% the course of healing was complicated by intraocular infection (10.7%) and chronic noninfectious posttraumatic uveitis (11.7%). Risk factors of a complicated course were defined, among which of special importance are specific features of the injury and secondary immunodeficiency, clinically manifesting by chronic inflammatory diseases, predominantly of the ENT organs and bronchopulmonary system.

Aerobic exercise prevents renal osteodystrophy via irisin-activated osteoblasts.

JCI Insight

January 2025

Department of Nephrology, Blood Purification Research Center, The First Affiliated Hospital, Fujian Medical University, Fuzhou, China.

Renal osteodystrophy is commonly seen in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) due to disrupted mineral homeostasis. Given the impaired renal function in these patients, common anti-resorptive agents, including bisphosphonates, must be used with caution or even contraindicated. Therefore, an alternative therapy without renal burden to combat renal osteodystrophy is urgently needed.

Fibrotic hypersensitivity pneumonitis (f-HP) is an interstitial lung disease in which various antigens in susceptible individuals may play a pathogenetic role. This study evaluates the role of transbronchial lung cryobiopsy (TBLC) and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) in identifying a UIP-like pattern and its association with fibrosis progression. We conducted a multicentre retrospective cohort study of patients diagnosed with f-HP who underwent BAL and TBLC between 2011 and 2023.

Importance: Triple-negative breast cancer is an aggressive subtype with a high incidence in young patients, a high incidence in non-Hispanic Black women, and a high risk of progression to metastatic cancer, a devastating sequela with a 12- to 18-month life expectancy. Until recently, one strategy for treating early-stage triple-negative breast cancer was chemotherapy after surgery. However, it was not known whether the addition of immune therapy to postsurgery chemotherapy would be beneficial.

Primary membranous nephropathy (PMN) is a prevalent renal disorder characterized by immune-mediated damage to the glomerular basement membrane, with recent studies highlighting the significant role of pyroptosis in its progression. In this study, we investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying PMN, focusing on the role of Tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6) in promoting disease advancement. Specifically, we examine how TRAF6 facilitates PMN progression by inducing the ubiquitination of Transforming growth factor-beta-activated kinase 1 (TAK1), which in turn activates the Gasdermin D (GSDMD)/Caspase-1 axis, leading to podocyte pyroptosis.

This case report describes the clinical course of a 78-year-old patient diagnosed with polycythemia vera (PV), who presented with pronounced acrocyanosis of the hands in 2021. The patient was treated with hydroxyurea (oncocarbide), and nailfold capillaroscopy revealed an "abnormal pattern" characterized by pronounced architectural disarray and capillary tortuosity, which is uncommon in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). In 2023, owing to suboptimal symptom management and hematological side effects, the treatment was switched to ruxolitinib, which led to significant clinical improvements by 2024, including near-complete resolution of acrocyanosis and substantial improvement in capillaroscopic abnormalities, with only residual capillary tortuosity noted.
