By analyzing the data available in the literature and his own findings, the author forwards a hypothesis on the endogenous etiology of nasal septal distortions as a result of human morphofunctional asymmetry. Asymmetries are more pronounced in males and right-handed individuals than in females and left-handed ones. Due to this fact, nasal septal distortions are more common in males and with their convex part deviate to the left nasal cavity. Emphasis is laid on the necessity of using a sparing approach to removing the nasal septal cartilage during surgical interventions.
