AI Article Synopsis

  • Lithium is effective for treating manic episodes and preventing bipolar disorder, with few reported side effects at therapeutic levels.
  • A case study describes a 38-year-old woman who experienced disorientation and memory deficits after 20 years of successful lithium treatment, following a manic episode.
  • These psychiatric symptoms resolved after discontinuing lithium, suggesting the possibility of a delirium-like syndrome with pseudo-dementia, highlighting the need to monitor for such side effects in long-term lithium patients.

Article Abstract

Lithium is used with great success in the treatment of manic patients and for prophylaxis of bipolar disorders. There are only few reports about neuropsychiatric side effects at therapeutic serum levels. We report on a 38 year old woman with bipolar disorder who was treated with lithium for 20 years without side-effects. Subsequent to a manic episode, she became disoriented at night and showed marked memory deficits. The patient did not show any neurological or gastrointestinal signs of intoxication. Lithium serum-levels were in therapeutic range. The psychiatric symptoms disappeared when lithium was stopped. We interpret these symptoms as delirant syndrome with pseudo-dementia at therapeutic lithium serum levels. This side-effect must be taken into account even in patients on successful longtime lithium therapy.

High Areal Loading Silicon Nanoparticle-Based Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Interfacial mechanical stability between silicon (Si) and the current collector is crucial when high areal-loading of Si is demanded as intense stress develops at the interface due to its extreme volume alteration during the lithiation-delithiation process. Therefore, we propose using a thin, rough, porous, and highly conductive carbon nanotube network (CNT-N) as a buffer layer between the Si and current collector that provides abundant anchor sites for Si nanoparticles. The strong and elastic CNT-N, which is not involved directly in the lithiation process, reduces stress at interfaces between the Si and CNT-N and the CNT-N and current collector.

Direct Cross-Couplings of Aryl Nonaflates with Aryl Bromides under Nickel Catalysis.

The direct cross-couplings of aryl nonaflates with aryl bromides could be successfully accomplished by utilizing nickel as the catalyst, magnesium as the metal mediator, and lithium chloride as the additive. The reactions proceeded efficiently in THF at room temperature to produce the desired biaryls in moderate to good yields, showing both a reasonable substrate scope and functional group tolerance. Additionally, an equally good performance could be realized when the reaction was subjected to scale-up synthesis.

A Single-Chain-in-Mean-Field (SCMF) algorithm was introduced to study block copolymer electrolytes in nonequilibrium conditions. This method self-consistently combines a particle-based description of the polymer with a generalized diffusion equation for the ionic fluxes, thus exploiting the time scale separation between fast ion motion and the slow polymer relaxation and self-assembly. We apply this computational method to study ion fluxes in electrochemical cells containing poly(ethylene oxide)-polystyrene (PEO-PS) block copolymers with added lithium salt.

BACKGROUND Indirect ceramic restorations often need multiple firings to match the shade of natural teeth or need after-correction and ceramic addition during the clinical trial stage. Many studies have examined how multiple firings affect the mechanical characteristics of zirconia-veneered prostheses. The effect of firing number on adhesion between these core and heat-pressed lithium disilicate veneering ceramics is unclear.

Flaky sputtered silicon MWCNTs core-shell structure as a freestanding binder-free electrode for lithium-ion battery.

Core-shell silicon/multiwall carbon nanotubes are one of the most promising anode candidates for further improvement of lithium-ion batteries. Sufficient accommodation for massive volume expansion of silicon during the lithiation process and preventing pulverization and delamination with easy fabrication processes are still critical issues for practical applications. In this study, core-shell silicon/MWCNTs anode materials were synthesized using a facile and controllable PECVD technique to realize aligned MWCNTs followed by a silicon sputtering step.
