Antibodies against LDL modified by malondialdehyde (MDA-LDL) are increased in smokers and individuals with a rapid atherosclerotic progression. HDL-cholesterol protects LDL through the oxidized lipid exchange. Oxidized HDL formed during this process has then an increased clearance from circulation.
