The Aspergillus nidulans cysA gene was cloned by functional complementation of the cysA1 mutation that impairs the synthesis of O:-acetylserine. The molecular nature of cysA1 and cysA103 alleles was characterized; a nucleotide substitution and a frame shift were found in the former and a deletion mutation in the latter. The CYSA protein is 525 amino acids long and is encoded by an uninterrupted open reading frame. Expression of the cysA gene appears not to be regulated by sulfur, carbon and nitrogen sources. Protein sequence analysis reveals extensive similarity to homoserine O:-acetyltransferases, particularly the bacterial ones, and no homology with known serine O:-acetyltransferases. The authors propose that the CYSA protein is analogous to serine O:-acetyltransferases, i.e. it catalyses the same reaction but has an independent evolutionary origin.

Complete chloroplast genome sequence of a moss, Takakia lepidozioides (Takakiopsida) is reported. The largest collection of genes in mosses and the intensive RNA editing were discussed from evolutionary perspectives. We assembled the entire plastid genome sequence of Takakia lepidozioides (Takakiopsida), emerging from the first phylogenetic split among extant mosses.

Effects of exogenous sulfate on the chromium(VI) metabolism of chromium(VI)-resistant engineered strains.

Department of Health Laboratory Technology, School of Public Health and Management, Chongqing Medical University, No. 61 Daxuecheng Middle Road, Shapingba District, Chongqing 401334, PR China. Electronic address:

Objective: To explore the effects of exogenous sulfate on the efficiency of chromium(VI) metabolism of three chromium(VI)-resistant Escherichia coli strains (eChrA / eChrB / eChrAB) by adding chromium(VI)-resistance genes chrA and/or chrB, for better understanding and further application of these Cr(VI)-resistant strains in environmental and industrial chromium removal.

Methods: Based on three engineered Cr(VI)-resistant strains exposed to different concentrations of sulfate: i) Evaluation of Cr(VI) metabolism characteristics, including the growth rate, the Cr(VI) tolerance, the removal, absorption and efflux capacity of Cr(VI); ii) Detection the expressions of Cr(VI) resistance-related genes (chrA and chrB), and sulfate channel protein-related genes (sbp, cysA, cysU and cysW genes) by RT-qPCR.

Results: Exogenous sulfate enhanced the Cr(VI) tolerance and the removal rate of these three engineered Cr(VI)-resistant strains, and promoted their growth rate under Cr(VI) stress, while suppressed their absorption and efflux capacity.

During enteric salmonellosis, neutrophil-generated reactive oxygen species alter the gut microenvironment, favoring survival of Typhimurium. While type 3 secretion system 1 (T3SS-1) and flagellar motility are potent Typhimurium agonists of the neutrophil respiratory burst neither of these pathways alone is responsible for stimulation of a maximal respiratory burst. To identify Typhimurium genes that impact the magnitude of the neutrophil respiratory burst, we performed a two-step screen of defined mutant libraries in coculture with human neutrophils.

Olisthodiscus represents a new class of Ochrophyta.

August 2021

Department of Biology and Ecology, Faculty of Science, University of Ostrava, 710 00, Ostrava, Czech Republic.

The phylogenetic diversity of Ochrophyta, a diverse and ecologically important radiation of algae, is still incompletely understood even at the level of the principal lineages. One taxon that has eluded simple classification is the marine flagellate genus Olisthodiscus. We investigated Olisthodiscus luteus K-0444 and documented its morphological and genetic differences from the NIES-15 strain, which we described as Olisthodiscus tomasii sp.
