This paper presents a model-based vision system for dentistry that will assist in diagnosis, treatment planning, and surgical simulation. Dentistry requires an accurate three-dimensional (3-D) representation of the teeth and jaws for diagnostic and treatment purposes. The proposed integrated computer vision system constructs a 3-D model of the patient's dental occlusion using an intraoral video camera. A modified shape from shading (SFS) technique, using perspective projection and camera calibration, extracts the 3-D information from a sequence of two-dimensional (2-D) images of the jaw. Data fusion of range data and 3-D registration techniques develop the complete jaw model. Triangulation is then performed, and a solid 3-D model is reconstructed. The system performance is investigated using ground truth data, and the results show acceptable reconstruction accuracy.

Background: Laparoscopic surgery training is a demanding process requiring technical and nontechnical skills. Surgical training has evolved from traditional approaches to the use of immersive digital technologies such as virtual, augmented, and mixed reality. These technologies are now integral to laparoscopic surgery training.

Purpose: This study aims to explore the feasibility and performance of three-dimensional ultrasound (3DUS) imaging in ophthalmology using commercially available ultrasound probes adapted to a slit lamp.
Significance: Despite ultrasound's long-standing application in eye care for visualizing ocular components, the evolution of 3DUS technology has remained inactive, with limited development and commercial availability. This study introduces a novel method that could potentially enhance ophthalmic diagnostics and treatment planning by providing comprehensive 3D views of ocular structures using existing ultrasound probes adapted to the conventional slit lamp.

Diabetic retinopathy, a retinal disorder resulting from diabetes mellitus, is a prominent cause of visual degradation and loss among the global population. Therefore, the identification and classification of diabetic retinopathy are of utmost importance in the clinical diagnosis and therapy. Currently, these duties are extensively carried out by manual examination utilizing the human visual system.

Background: Deficiency of adiponectin and its downstream signaling may contribute to the pathogenesis of kidney injury in type 2 diabetes. Adiponectin activates intracellular signaling via adiponectin receptors 1 and 2 (AdipoR1 and AdipoR2), but the role of AdipoR-mediated signaling in glomerular injury in type 2 diabetes remains unknown.
Methods: The expression of AdipoR1 in the kidneys of people with type 2 diabetes and the expression of podocyte proteins or injury markers in the kidneys of AdipoR1-knockout (AdipoR1-KO) mice and immortalized AdipoR1-deficient human podocytes were investigated by immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting.

In the pinhole point diffraction interferometer (PPDI), proper alignment between the reflection spot of the tested component and the pinhole is critical to obtain accurate interferograms. At present, adjusting for tilt error requires manual manipulation, and defocus error cannot be corrected. These limitations impede the instrumentation process of PPDI.
