The commensal bacterium Streptococcus sp. A12 has multiple properties that may promote the stability of health-associated oral biofilms, including overt antagonism of the dental caries pathogen Streptococcus mutans. A LanFEG-type ABC transporter, PcfFEG, confers tolerance to the lantibiotic nisin and enhances the ability of A12 to compete against S.

Lantibiotics, an important group of ribosomally synthesized peptides, represent an important arsenal of novel promising antimicrobials showing high potency in fighting against the prevalence of antibiotic resistance among microbial pathogens. However, due to the lack of high throughput strategies for the isolation and identification of these compounds, our information regarding their structure and especially sequence-based properties is far from complete. Therefore, in the present study, a comprehensive sequence-based analysis of these peptides was performed with the help of machine learning approach together with a feature selection technique.

Plantaricin NC8, a two-peptide non-lantibiotic class IIb bacteriocin composed of PLNC8α and PLNC8β and derived from Lactobacillus plantarum ZJ316, has been shown to be highly potent against a range of bacteria and fungi. In this study, we assessed the antimicrobial mechanism of plantaricin NC8 against the most sensitive bacterial strain, Micrococcus luteus CGMCC 1.193.

Strains belonging to the genus of Staphylococci, such as Staphylococcus aureus are common pathologic bacteria which may cause nosocomial cross infection and food contamination. Plantaricin EF (PlnEF), a two-peptide nonlantibiotic bacteriocin produced by Lactobacillus plantarum strains, shows great inhibitory effects against Gram-positive Staphylococci strains. To overproduce this two-peptide bacteriocin, plnE and plnF genes were cloned into pET32a (+) vector and heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli by fusion with His6-tag in this study.

Mannose phosphotransferase system (Man-PTS) is the main mannose permease in bacteria but it is also a known receptor for subclass IIa bacteriocins (pediocin-like group) as well as subclass IId lactococcin A (LcnA) and lactococcin B (LcnB) (LcnA-like group). Subclass IIa bacteriocins exhibit a strong activity against Listeria spp. but they are not against Lactococcus spp.
