The FRTL-5 rat thyroid cell line is widely used for studies of thyrocyte function and growth. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) on FRTL-5 cells. HGF has previously been known to be a potent regulator of thyrocyte growth and differentiation. Met, the receptor for HGF was expressed in FRTL-5 cells, as well as in primary cultures of porcine thyrocytes included in the study as control. On HGF stimulation Met was tyrosine phosphorylated in both porcine and FRTL-5 cells, indicating an activation of the receptor. Addition of HGF induced changes of cell shape, scattering and proliferation of the porcine thyrocytes, but not in the FRTL-5 cells; yet, a functional coupling of Met to the p85 subunit of the phosphatidylinositol-3'-kinase (PI3'-K) in coprecipitation experiments, formation of focal adhesions detected in immunofluorescence staining with an antivinculin antibody, and induction of c-fos mRNA in Northern blot analysis was observed in FRTL-5 cells, showing a transduction of the HGF/Met signal. In summary, despite the expression of apparently functional Met, the FRTL-5 cells are unable to properly respond to HGF.

Quercetin is the most abundant flavonoid present in fruits and vegetables. For its antiproliferative, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidants activities, it is an active ingredient of several herbal remedies and is available as a nutraceutical. Experimental studies performed in vitro have demonstrated that quercetin inhibits growth and function in normal thyroid cells and may act as a thyroid disruptor.

Since the safety of new-generation polyester-based internal coatings regarding the migration of non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) is poorly documented, studies are needed to identify NIAS originating from these food-contact materials (FCM). The aim of this study was to identify volatile and semi-volatile NIAS from polyester-based coatings in order to assess their hazard and ensure consumers' safety with regard to exposure from canned food. Extraction and migration tests were carried out on a single polyester-coated tin plate (5 batches) using two solvents: acetonitrile and ethanol 95%, then FCM's extracts and migrates were analysed by GC-MS.

Aldosterone (Aldo) exerts its action through binding with the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR). Clinically, a link between primary aldosteronism (PA) and thyroid diseases has been hypothesised. However, the presence and activity of MR on the thyroid have not yet been demonstrated.

Introduction: Iodide is an essential micronutrient for the synthesis of thyroid hormones and its imbalance is involved in the origin of different thyroid pathological processes. Selenium (Se) is another essential trace element that contributes to thyroid preservation through the control of the redox homeostasis. Different studies have demonstrated that sodium-iodide-symporter (NIS) is downregulated in the presence of iodide excess and Se supplementation reverses this effect.
