Published: November 2000

The data on the realization of the program of the prevention of HIV infection among intravenously injecting drug users in the South-Western administrative district of Moscow are presented. In the course of the realization of the project drawn up in accordance with this program the information package permitting the collection, analysis and transmission of the necessary information on the epidemic situation and leading risk factors in the zone of the action of the project has been compiled, and on the basis of this information the tactics and strategy of preventive measures have been worked out. The main advantage of the information system thus developed is the possibility of its use in computers of any class, in any operational system, as well as its use in Internet.

A Spiropyran-Based Hydrogel Composite for Wearable Detectors to Monitor Visible Light Intensity to Prevent Myopia.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Advanced Textile Materials & Manufacturing Technology, Ministry of Education, Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, 928 Second Avenue, 310018 Hangzhou, China.

A wearable detector to monitor visible light intensity is realized by the restrained photochromism of a hydrogel composite containing light-responsive spiropyran with hydroxyl groups (SPOH). When exposed to visible light, the SPOH experiences a ring-opening to a ring-closed transition accompanied by discoloration from red to yellow. Unlike in the solution, the photochromism/discoloration rate is strongly correlated to the cross-linking points.

Phase transition and superconductivity of selenium under pressure.

Phys Chem Chem Phys

January 2025

Institute of Atomic and Molecular Physics, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610065, China.

Although a substantial amount of research has been conducted to unravel the structural configurations of selenium under pressure, the exquisite sensitivity of selenium's p-orbital electrons to this external force, leading to a plethora of structural variations, leaves several intermediary phases still shrouded in mystery. We, herein, systematically identify the structural and electronic transformations of selenium under high pressure up to 300 GPa, employing crystal structure prediction in conjunction with first-principles calculations. Our results for the transition sequence (321 → 2/ → 3̄ → 3̄) of selenium are in good agreement with experimental ones.

Optimizing autonomous artificial intelligence diagnostics for neuro-ocular health in space missions.

Life Sci Space Res (Amst)

February 2025

Human-Machine Perception Laboratory, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Nevada, Reno, Reno, NV, United States.

Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS) presents a critical risk in long-duration missions, with microgravity-induced changes that threaten astronaut vision and mission outcomes. Current SANS monitoring, limited to pre- and post-flight exams, lacks in-flight diagnostics, highlighting an urgent need for autonomous tools capable of real-time assessment. Grok, an AI platform by xAI, offers promising potential as an advanced diagnostic tool for space-based health monitoring.

The longstanding view of doctors as scientists has been an emphasis in the MCAT and medical school training. However, the AAMC recommended recognizing the importance of social and behavioral science for medicine. There is also a growing realization that being a smart problem solver and the physician as scientist model emphasizes a cold cognitive problem-solving paradigm that overlooks other human capacities that may be critical to medical reasoning and decision-making.
