Published: September 2000

Two- and three-photon electron spin echoes of a two-level system are observed using, in addition to the microwave excitation, a linearly polarized radio-frequency field oriented along the static magnetic field B(0). Such multiphoton echoes are detected when the sum of the energies of one microwave and one or two radio-frequency photons are equal to the difference between energies of two spin states. The multiphoton character of the echoes is confirmed by measuring the spin nutation frequency as a function of the angle between the radio-frequency field and B(0), and monitoring the echo amplitude as a function of the radiation field strengths. Floquet theory, usually applied for the description of multiphoton resonances with an odd number of photons, is extended to the case where an even number of photons participate in the transition. High-impedance microwave resonators with two-photon nonlinear effects.

Nat Commun

January 2025

NanoLund and Solid State Physics, Lund University, Box 118, 22100, Lund, Sweden.

Nonlinear effects play a central role in photonics as they form the foundation for most of the device functionalities such as amplification and quantum state preparation and detection. Typically the nonlinear effects are weak and emerge only at high photon numbers with strong drive. Here we present an experimental study of a Josephson junction -based high-impedance resonator.

Advances in Imaging of Traumatic Nerve Injuries.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg

December 2024

From the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT (Graesser), the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, St. Louis, MO (Parsons), and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, St. Louis, MO (Olafsen, Dy, and Brogan).

Traumatic peripheral nerve injuries represent a spectrum of conditions and remain challenging to diagnose and prognosticate. High-resolution ultrasonography and magnetic resonance neurography have emerged as useful diagnostic modalities in the evaluation of traumatic peripheral nerve and brachial plexus injuries. Ultrasonography is noninvasive, is able to rapidly interrogate large areas and multiple nerves, allows for a dynamic assessment of nerves and their surrounding anatomy, and is cost-effective.

To our knowledge, this study presents the first implementation of wavelength-resolved resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectroscopy under atmospheric pressure ionization conditions using a high-resolution mass spectrometric system. Atmospheric pressure laser ionization MS spectroscopic measurements were conducted on over 70 different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and hetero-PAHs (N, S, and O) in standard solutions, as well as three complex PAH-containing samples. The results demonstrate the successful transfer of REMPI spectroscopy from vacuum to atmospheric pressure conditions, maintaining spectral integrity without significant band broadening.

Ultrathin BIC Metasurfaces Based on Ultra-Low-Loss SbSe Phase-Change Material.

Nano Lett

January 2025

School of Physics and Astronomy, Faculty of Science, Monash University, Melbourne, Victoria 3800, Australia.

Ultrathin and low-loss phase-change materials (PCMs) are highly valued for their fast and effective phase transitions and applications in reconfigurable photonic chips, metasurfaces, optical modulators, sensors, photonic memories, and neuromorphic computing. However, conventional PCMs mostly suffer from high intrinsic losses in the near-infrared (NIR) region, limiting their potential for high quality factor (-factor) resonant metasurfaces. Here we present the design and fabrication of tunable bound states in the continuum (BIC) metasurfaces using the ultra-low-loss PCM SbSe.

Spectroscopy and Excited-State Dynamics of Methyl Ferulate in Molecular Beams.

J Phys Chem A

Van't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences, University of Amsterdam, Science Park 904, Amsterdam 1098 XH, the Netherlands.

The spectroscopic and dynamic properties of methyl ferulate─a naturally occurring ultraviolet-protecting filter─and microsolvated methyl ferulate have been studied under molecular beam conditions using resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization spectroscopy in combination with quantum chemical calculations. We demonstrate and rationalize how the phenyl substitution pattern affects the state ordering of the lower excited singlet state manifold and what the underlying reason is for the conformation-dependent Franck-Condon (FC) activity in the UV-excitation spectra. Studies on microsolvated methyl ferulate reveal potential coordination sites and the influence of such coordination on the spectroscopic properties.
