Biocompatibility testing of new polymers in a moving implant bed.

Total reconstruction of the auricle requires a skillful surgical technique and an appropriate material for the shape-supporting frame. Up to now, there is no such material apart from autologous rib cartilage. The combination of chronic microtraumatization of adjacent tissue caused by the mobility of an implant bed such as the auricle and the foreign-body reaction to currently available artificial polymers frequently results in extrusion. In our animal model (rats), polymers of different elasticity were implanted in a moving implant bed to analyse differences in foreign-body reaction related to implant elasticity. The results were significantly better for a rather stiff control material (porous polyethylene). A contributing factor may be better fixation of the implant material by tissue ingrowth into its micropores.

Introduction: Extubation failure after neonatal cardiac surgery is associated with increased intensive care unit length of stay, morbidity, and mortality. We performed a quality improvement project to create and implement a peri-extubation bundle, including extubation readiness testing, spontaneous breathing trial, and high-risk criteria identification, using best practices at high-performing centers to decrease neonatal and infant extubation failure by 20% from a baseline of 15.7% to 12.

Transradial-based thoracic branch endograft repair for thoracic aortic aneurysms experience at a suburban community hospital.

We present two cases where a transradial-based approach was used to implant thoracic branch aortic endografts to repair aortic aneurysms totally percutaneously. Both procedures were performed electively at a 330-bed suburban community hospital. No complications were associated with either procedure with both patients only requiring overnight observation and being discharged home the next day.
