Objectives: The study compares direct full-field digital mammography (FFDM) to the state-of-the-art conventional screen-film mammography (SFM) concerning the detectability of simulated microcalcifications.
Materials And Methods: The investigations were performed with a FFDM system (Senographe 2000D, GEMS) and a SFM system (Senographe DMR, GEMS, Fuji UM MA film with Fuji UM MAMMO FINE screen). An anthropomorphic breast phantom with superimposed microcalcifications (50-200 microns) was used to evaluate the detectability of microcalcifications with a confidence level ranging from 1 to 5. Contact mammograms and magnification spot views (m = 1.8) of the FFDM and SFM systems were compared. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed by three well-experienced readers.
Results: The ROC analysis revealed a higher performance of the digital images compared to the conventional screen-film mammograms. The area under the ROC-curve (Az) in the digital contact mammograms was 0.68 versus 0.63 in the conventional technique. The results were not significantly different. In digital spot views, Az was 0.79 versus 0.70 in the conventional spot views.
Conclusions: The results suggest that FFDM is at least equivalent or--as far as spot views are concerned--may be superior to conventional SFM in the detection of microcalcifications.

This paper presents, for the first time, a rotary actuator functionalized by an inclined disc rotor that serves as a distal optical scanner for endoscopic probes, enabling side-viewing endoscopy in luminal organs using different imaging/analytic modalities such as optical coherence tomography and Raman spectroscopy. This scanner uses a magnetic rotor designed to have a mirror surface on its backside, being electromagnetically driven to roll around the cone-shaped hollow base to create a motion just like a precessing coin. An optical probing beam directed from the probe's optic fiber is passed through the hollow cone to be incident and bent on the back mirror of the rotating inclined rotor, circulating the probing beam around the scanner for full 360° sideway imaging.

In humans and nonhuman primates, the central 1° of vision is processed by the foveola, a retinal structure that comprises a high density of photoreceptors and is crucial for primate-specific high-acuity vision, color vision and gaze-directed visual attention. Here, we developed high-spatial-resolution ultrahigh-field 7T functional magnetic resonance imaging methods for functional mapping of the foveolar visual cortex in awake monkeys. In the ventral pathway (visual areas V1-V4 and the posterior inferior temporal cortex), viewing of a small foveolar spot elicits a ring of multiple (eight) foveolar representations per hemisphere.

The pathways involved in the pathophysiology of fetal growth restriction (FGR) and small for gestational age (SGA) are incompletely understood. We conduct a systematic review to identify metabolomic signatures in maternal and newborn tissues and body fluids samples associated with FGR/SGA. Here, we report that 825 non-duplicated metabolites were significantly altered across the 48 included studies using 10 different human biological samples, of which only 56 (17 amino acids, 12 acylcarnitines, 11 glycerophosphocholines, six fatty acids, two hydroxy acids, and eight other metabolites) were significantly and consistently up- or down-regulated in more than one study.
