A philophthalmid species from Israel using the freshwater snail Melanoides tuberculata as intermediate host was studied. The biological and morphological characteristics of all developmental stages of the life cycle of this philophthalmid were described, and compared to those of Philophthalmus lucipetus Rudolphi, 1819 from Israel, Philophthalmus gralli Mathis and Leger, 1910 from Jordan, Philophthalmus palpebrarum Looss, 1899, Philophthalmus nocturnus Looss, 1907, Cercaria distomatosa Looss 1896 from Egypt, and Philophthalmus lucknowensis Baugh, 1962 from India. The possible identity with 1 of these species is discussed. On the basis of comparative analysis of the data for all parasite stages in the life cycle, geographical distribution, snail hosts, and snail host specificity, we propose to designate the Israeli Melanoides tuberculata-transmitted eye fluke to Philophthalmus distomatosa n. comb. (Looss, 1896), (Digenea: Philophthalmidae).

In 2022, the European Union put forward the REPowerEU plan in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, aiming at enhancing short-term energy security by diversifying imports and reducing natural gas demand while accelerating the deployment of renewable alternatives in the long term. Here, we quantify the life cycle environmental impacts of both REPowerEU's short-term measures, including the controversial extended coal-fired power plant operations, and how the first year of the crisis was managed in practice. We find that the policy measures' impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions would be negligible, although they could have detrimental effects on other environmental categories.

The strong correlation between reproductive life cycle type and chromosome numbers in green plants has been a long-standing mystery in evolutionary biology. Within green plants, the derived condition of heterosporous reproduction has emerged from the ancestral condition of homospory in disparate locations on the phylogenetic tree at least 11 times, of which three lineages are extant. In all green plant lineages where heterospory has emerged, there has been a significant downsizing in chromosome numbers.

Objectives: This case series describes adults with aquaporin 4 immunoglobulin G-seropositive (AQP4-IgG+) neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) who switched treatment from eculizumab to satralizumab.

Methods: Case information for patients with AQP4-IgG+ NMOSD who received satralizumab for ≥6 months was obtained from US healthcare providers from April 2022 to January 2024. Patient characteristics, examination findings, diagnostic test results, treatment response, and adverse events were recorded.

Introduction: The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) has highlighted the need for efficient diagnostic methods to assess the state of health (SoH) of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) at the end of their life cycle. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) offers a non-invasive technique for determining battery degradation. However, automating this process in industrial settings remains a challenge.

Improving mammary gland epithelial cells proliferation through nutrition is an important approach for enhancing sow milk production and piglet growth. An intermediate metabolite of valine, 3-hydroxyisobutyrate (3-HIB), regulates cellular lipid metabolism. In the present study, we investigated the effects of 3-HIB on porcine mammary gland epithelial cells proliferation and lipid metabolism.
