The exopolysaccharide (EPS) and capsular polysaccharide (CPS) composition of four Azospirillum brasilense strains differing in their aggregation capacity was analyzed by high performance anion exchange chromatography. When growing the different strains in an aggregation inducing medium containing a high carbon:nitrogen (C:N) ratio, both EPS and CPS showed a positive correlation between aggregation and the relative amount of arabinose. Arabinose was not detected in polysaccharides from Sp72002, a pleiotrophic Tn5 mutant strain impaired in aggregation. Arabinose was also not detected in extracellular polysaccharides of bacteria grown in a low C:N ratio, non-inducing aggregation medium, with exception for a relatively small amount found in the CPS of FAJ0204, a super-aggregating mutant strain. The only monosaccharides able to significantly inhibit aggregation at low sugar concentration when tested in a bioassay were arabinose (at a higher extent) and galactose. The possibility that residues of arabinose present in the extracellular polysaccharides are involved in the aggregation of A. brasilense is discussed.

Microbial reduction of selenium oxyanions, highly soluble, mobile and toxic inorganic selenium compounds, to insoluble selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) is a widely spread phenomenon which is of geochemical, environmental and biotechnological importance. While selenite bioreduction is known for a wide variety of microorganisms, selenate bioreduction is not so common and has mostly been documented for anaerobes, with merely a few reported cases related to aerobic or microaerobic conditions. In some biogenic Se NPs of microbial origin, the presence of sulfur was detected together with selenium in Se NPs, particularly when increased concentrations of sulfate were present in the medium.

Most improved strategies for phytoextraction do not achieve a synergistic enhancement of chromium (Cr) accumulation capacity and biomass. This study investigated the impacts of co-addition of garbage enzyme (GE) and microelectrolytic iron-carbon filler (MF) on soil physicochemical properties, as well as form and uptake of Cr during aging and phytoextraction process. The response of rhizosphere microbial community to co-addition and its role in enhancing the remediation performance of ryegrass was further analyzed.

Soybean cultivation in tropical regions relies on symbioses with nitrogen-fixing Bradyrhizobium and plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPBs), reducing environmental impacts of N fertilizers and pesticides. We evaluate the effects of soybean inoculation with different bacterial consortia combined with PGPBs or microbial secondary metabolites (MSMs) on rhizosoil chemistry, plant physiology, plant nutrition, grain yield, and rhizosphere microbial functions under field conditions over three growing seasons with four treatments: standard inoculation of Bradyrhizobium japonicum and Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens consortium (SI); SI plus foliar spraying with Bacillus subtilis (SI + Bs); SI plus foliar spraying with Azospirillum brasilense (SI + Az); and SI plus seed application of MSMs enriched in lipo-chitooligosaccharides extracted from B. diazoefficiens and Rhizobium tropici (SI + MSM).

Nanotechnology has demonstrated significant potential to improve agricultural production and increase crop tolerance to abiotic stress including exposure to heavy metals. The present study investigated the mechanisms by which aloe vera extract gel-biosynthesized (AVGE) selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) alleviated cadmium (Cd)-induced toxicity to rice ( L.).
