Target-specific rib biopsy using the gamma probe.

Am J Surg

Published: May 2000

Background: Intraoperative localization of rib abnormalities identified on bone scan can be deceptively difficult. Previously used techniques have had limited sensitivity and accuracy. The gamma probe can help localize these bone scan "hot spots."

Methods: Over the past 17 months, 5 patients underwent gamma-probe-directed limited rib resections following intravenous administration of Tc99m-MDP. Three patients required biopsies for suspected malignancy, and the other 2 underwent therapeutic resections for pain. The device was easy to work with following minimal training.

Results: Localization was excellent, limiting the extent of surgery needed. Comparison with rib counting and preoperative bone scan localization showed a discrepancy of up to 13 cm. Sensitivity and accuracy were each 100%.

Conclusions: The gamma probe offers a simple and significant advance in the performance of rib biopsies for nonpalpable lesions.

Evaporating Primordial Black Holes, the String Axiverse, and Hot Dark Radiation.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Univ Coimbra, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra and CFisUC, Rua Larga, 3004-516 Coimbra, Portugal.

The search for primordial black holes (PBHs) with masses M≪M_{⊙} is motivated by natural early-Universe production mechanisms and that PBHs can be dark matter. For M≲10^{14}  kg, the PBH density is constrained by null searches for their expected Hawking emission (HE), the characteristics of which are, however, sensitive to new states beyond the standard model. If there exists a large number of spin-0 particles in nature, PBHs can, through HE, develop and maintain non-negligible spins, modifying the visible HE.

Therapeutic potential of rutin in premenstrual depression: evidence from and studies.

Front Pharmacol

January 2025

Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Stress Injury of Shandong Province, Laboratory Animal Center, Central Hospital Affiliated to Shandong First Medical University, Jinan, China.

Introduction: Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a cyclical mood disorder that severely affects the daily life of women of reproductive age. Most of the medications being used clinically have limitations such as low efficacy, side effects, and high cost, so there is an urgent need to discover safer and more effective medications. Rutin is a natural flavonol glycoside with various pharmacological properties including antidepressant.

Activation of the brain-penetrant beta3-adrenergic receptor (Adrb3) is implicated in the treatment of depressive disorders. Enhancing GABAergic inputs from interneurons onto pyramidal cells of prefrontal cortex (PFC) represents a strategy for antidepressant therapies. Here, we probed the effects of the activation of Adrb3 on GABAergic transmission onto pyramidal neurons in the PFC using in vitro electrophysiology.

Unlabelled: Layer 6 corticothalamic (L6CT) neurons project to both cortex and thalamus, inducing multiple effects including the modulation of cortical and thalamic firing, and the emergence of high gamma oscillations in the cortical local field potential (LFP). We hypothesize that the high gamma oscillations driven by L6CT neuron activation are shaped by the dynamic engagement of intracortical and cortico-thalamo-cortical circuits. To test this, we optogenetically activated L6CT neurons in NTSR1-cre mice expressing channelrhodopsin-2 in L6CT neurons.

In phage display technology, exogenous DNA is inserted into the phage genome, which generates a fusion protein with the phage coat protein, facilitates expression and promotes biological activity. This approach is primarily used to screen antibody libraries owing to its high library capacity and fast technical cycle; additionally, various types of genetically altered antibodies can be easily produced. In this study, we fused the pIII structural protein of the M13K07 phage with a scFv created by connecting the VH and VL domains of an anti-IFN-γ antibody.
