Reproductive efficiency in naturally serviced and artificially inseminated beef cows.

Trop Anim Health Prod

September 2019

Department of Research and Specialist Services, Matopos Research Institute, P Bag k5137, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

A study was conducted to compare conception rates in 71 Tuli and 86 Afrikander beef cattle bred using either artificial insemination (AI) or the bull. Animals were bred using either artificial insemination or natural service at Matopos Research Station. Animals were grouped into three groups of heifers (parity 0; P0), second calvers (parity 1; P1) and mature cows (parity 2; P2) before being randomly assigned to one of the two breeding methods.

Renitelo cattle dermatophilosis and PCR-RFLP analysis of MHC gene.

Ann N Y Acad Sci

October 2006

CIRAD-EMVT, Campus de Baillarguet, TA30/G, 34398-Montpellier Cedex S, France.

Renitelo breed is a cattle breed created at Kianjasoa station (Madagascar) by a triple crossing Malagasy Zebu x Limousine x Afrikander. This breed besides many valuable advantages, such as rapid growth and drought power, presents a huge disadvantage which is sensitivity to skin disease, dermatophilosis, previously known as streptotrichosis. This disease caused by Dermatophilus congolensis is one of the major threats for the population of Renitelo cattle.

Molecular advances in thyroglobulin disorders.

Clin Chim Acta

December 2006

Laboratorio de Biología Molecular, Cátedra de Genética y Biología Molecular, Facultad de Farmacia y Bioquímica, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Junín 956, 1113 - Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Synthesis of tri-iodothyronine (T(3)) and thyroxine (T(4)) follows a metabolic pathway that depends on the integrity of the thyroglobulin structure. This large glycoprotein is a homodimer of 660 kDa synthesized and secreted by the thyroid cells into the lumen of thyroid follicle. In humans it is coded by a single copy gene, 270 kb long, that maps on chromosome 8q24 and contains an 8.

Molecular epidemiology and subgroup analysis of bovine group A rotaviruses associated with diarrhea in South African calves.

J Clin Microbiol

December 1993

Department of Animal Pathology and Infectious Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Medical University of Southern Africa, MEDUNSA, Pretoria.

Rotavirus-positive specimens were recovered from 143 Afrikander calves on two farms in the northeastern Cape of South Africa during late 1988 and 1989. The rotavirus strains were analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the RNA genome, and four rotavirus RNA electrophoretypes, each with a long profile, were identified. A distinct RNA profile was identified on the farms during 1988, but by early 1989, two patterns existed, one unique to each farm.

The integrity of the Tg structure as a protein is essential for adequate synthesis of thyroid hormone. Also a large supply of iodine and of thyroid hormone is stored into the Tg molecule and available for secretion on demand. Mutations in Tg gene or hyposialylated Tg due to a defective sialyltransferase activity would cause a structurally defective protein and severely impair the functional ability of Tg.
