Purpose/objectives: To review the current knowledge of anemia associated with cancer management and nursing interventions.
Data Sources: Published theory, research, and clinical practice sources.
Data Synthesis: Anemia often is overlooked as a priority associated with quality patient care. The diagnosis of cancer and associated treatments magnify the incidence of anemia among the cancer population. Untreated anemia negatively affects the success of radiation therapy, activities of daily living, quality of life, and morbidity and mortality.
Conclusions: Identifying the underlying cause(s) of anemia in patients with cancer is critical to positive care outcomes and requires early nursing assessment and interventions.
Implications For Nursing Practice: Nurses play a critical role in maintaining and improving well-being and quality of life of patients at risk for anemia by understanding erythropoiesis, pathophysiology, nursing assessment (including laboratory data assessment), and nursing interventions related to anemia.

An 86-year-old male patient developed paresthesia in both hands, and six months later, pancytopenia was noted. He was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome following bone marrow aspiration. Despite high serum vitamin B12 level, elevated level of serum homocysteine, positive anti-intrinsic factor antibody, and T-weighted hyperintense lesions on spinal cord MRI led to a diagnosis of subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord.

Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is an important differential diagnosis in thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA). The absence of definitive biomarkers usually allows for aHUS to be diagnosed only through a process of exclusion. Due to the unfavorable prognosis if adequate therapy is delayed or not provided, differential diagnostic considerations and initiation of treatment must occur promptly.

An 83-year-old female patient presented with angina pectoris, hemoglobinuria and jaundice. Laboratory diagnostics proved difficult due to hemolysis in all blood tubes, following re-evaluation after warming the blood sample. With low haptoglobin, elevated lactate dehydrogenase and elevated indirect bilirubin, we made a suspected diagnosis of autoimmune hemolytic anemia with cold antibodies, which was confirmed through a positive Coombs test and detection of C3d-loaded erythrocytes.
