Bacteria-Powered Self-Healing Concrete: Breakthroughs, Challenges, and Future Prospects.

J Ind Microbiol Biotechnol

December 2024

Botany and Microbiology Department, Faculty of Science, Tanta University, Tanta 31527, Egypt.

In a world where concrete structures face constant degradation from environmental forces, a revolutionary solution has emerged: bio-self-healing concrete. This innovation involves embedding dormant bacteria within the concrete mix, poised to spring into action when cracks form. As moisture seeps into the cracks, these bacterial agents are activated, consuming nutrients and converting them into calcium carbonate, a natural substance that fills and repairs the fractures, restoring the material's integrity.

Rapid and non-invasive renal injury diagnosis unlocked by a glimpse into urinary protein particle size and charge.

Biosens Bioelectron

March 2025

College of Pharmacy and International Cooperative Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine Modernization and Innovative Drug Development of Chinese Ministry of Education, Jinan University, Guangzhou, 510632, China. Electronic address:

Urinary protein, an important marker for early detection of kidney injury, would change in type and content dynamically with the degree of kidney injury due to the particle size and charge selectivity of the glomerular filtration system, making it significantly valuable for accurate classification and early diagnosis. In this study, we developed a fluorescence sensor (Ami-AuNP/DNAs) based on charge interaction to rapidly identify the progression of kidney injury. When the positively charged Ami-AuNP combines with negatively charged DNAs, fluorescence quenching occurs, and urine proteins that appear compete with the DNAs, leading to fluorescence recovery.

Purpose: Caloric restriction (CR), the permanent or periodic reduction of caloric intake, is a dietary strategy that promotes longevity and healthspan, yielding multiple beneficial effects, such as improved insulin sensitivity and mitochondrial function, decreased body weight, and mitigation of cardiometabolic risk factors. The purpose of our study was the in silico and in vitro assessment of the effects exerted by pinostilbene on SIRT1 and SIRT6 compared to those of resveratrol, a known activator of these enzymes.

Materials And Methods: Molecular docking was carried out to determine the interactions with SIRT1 and SIRT6 and, further, the effect of pinostilbene on their activity was tested in vitro to evaluate if it parallels resveratrol's effects regarding SIRT activation.
