Article Abstract

Traditionally, prokaryotic solute transport systems are classified into major groups based on the energetic requirement of the transport process. These include the secondary transporters that are driven by a proton or sodium motive force, and the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) primary transporters, which use the hydrolysis of ATP to fuel transport. These transporters are specified by entirely different architectures of polypeptides. Recently, transport systems have been discovered that are composed of combinations of distinct functional modules of both secondary and ABC transporters. These findings indicate that during evolution the combination of integral membrane transport proteins with either a periplasmic solute-binding protein or a cytosolic ATPase, or both, have resulted in distinct classes of transporters with unique architectures and properties.

Conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline, intrinsically porous materials that combine remarkable electrical conductivity with exceptional structural and chemical versatility. This rare combination makes these materials highly suitable for a wide range of energy-related applications. However, the electrical conductivity in MOF-based devices is often limited by the presence of different types of structural disorder.

Ecological Drivers of Evolution of Swine Influenza in the United States: A Review.

Emerg Microbes Infect

January 2025

Center for Influenza and Emerging Diseases, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO 652011, USA.

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) pose a major public health threat due to their wide host range and pandemic potential. Pigs have been proposed as "mixing vessels" for avian, swine, and human IAVs, significantly contributing to influenza ecology. In the United States, IAVs are enzootic in commercial swine farming operations, with numerous genetic and antigenic IAV variants having emerged in the past two decades.

Hierarchical Selenium-Doped Nickel-Cobalt Hybrids on Carbon Paper for the Overall Water-Splitting Electrocatalytic System.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

Department of Battery and Chemical Engineering, Hanyang University, Ansan, Gyeonggi-do 15588, Republic of Korea.

Designing and constructing hierarchically structured materials with heterogeneous compositions is the key to developing an effective catalyst for overall water-splitting applications. Herein, we report the fabrication of hollow-structured selenium-doped nickel-cobalt hybrids on carbon paper as a self-supported electrode (denoted as Se-Ni|Co/CP, where Ni|Co hybrids consist of nickel-cobalt alloy-incorporated nickel-cobalt oxide). The procedure involves direct growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) on bimetal-based nickel-cobalt hydroxide (NiCoOH) electrodeposited on CP, followed by selenous etching and pyrolysis to obtain the final Se-Ni|Co/CP electrocatalytic system.

Non-canonical Roles of Complement in the CNS: From Synaptic Organizer to Presynaptic Modulator of Glutamate Transmission.

Curr Neuropharmacol

January 2025

Department of Pharmacy, DIFAR, Pharmacology and Toxicology Section, University of Genoa, Viale Cembrano 4, 16148, Genoa, Italy.

The central nervous system (CNS) is not an immune-privileged compartment, but it is intimately intertwined with the immune system. Among the components shared by the two compartments is the complement, a main constituent of innate immunity, which is also produced centrally and controls the development and organization of synaptic connections. Complement is considered a doubled-faced system that, besides controlling the physiological development of the central network, also subserves synaptic engulfment pivotal to the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.

Achieving ultrahigh permeance and superoleophobicity is crucial for membrane application. Here, we demonstrated that a poly(ionic liquid)/PES hydrogel membrane can achieve dual goals. The high polarity of the ionic liquids induces the water molecules on the membrane surface to be arranged more ordered, as verified by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and advanced femtosecond sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy.
