We have previously reported that wild type strains of Escherichia coli grow on the chitin disaccharide N,N'-diacetylchitobiose, (GlcNAc)(2), as the sole source of carbon (Keyhani, N. O., and Roseman, S. (1997) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci., U. S. A. 94, 14367-14371). A nonhydrolyzable analogue of (GlcNAc)(2,) methyl beta-N, N'-[(3)H]diacetylthiochitobioside ([(3)H]Me-TCB), was used to characterize the disaccharide transport process, which was found to be mediated by the phosphoenolpyruvate:glycose phosphotransferase system (PTS). Here and in the accompanying papers (Keyhani, N. O., Boudker, O., and Roseman, S. (2000) J. Biol. Chem. 275, 33091-33101; Keyhani, N. O., Bacia, K., and Roseman, S. (2000) J. Biol. Chem. 275, 33102-33109; Keyhani, N. O., Rodgers, M., Demeler, B., Hansen, J., and Roseman, S. (2000) J. Biol. Chem. 275, 33110-33115), we report that transport of [(3)H]Me-TCB and (GlcNAc)(2) involves a specific PTS Enzyme II complex, requires Enzyme I and HPr of the PTS, and results in the accumulation of the sugar derivative as a phosphate ester. The phosphoryl group is linked to the C-6 position of the GlcNAc residue at the nonreducing end of the disaccharide. The [(3)H]Me-TCB uptake system was induced only by (GlcNAc)(n), n = 2 or 3. The apparent K(m) of transport was 50-100 micrometer, and effective inhibitors of uptake included (GlcNAc)(n), n = 2 or 3, cellobiose, and other PTS sugars, i.e. glucose and GlcNAc. Presumably the PTS sugars inhibit by competing for PTS components. Kinetic properties of the transport system are described.

Introduction: The University of Utah College of Pharmacy conducted an annual survey to gauge the relationship between multiple dimensions of students' satisfaction, and stress, with the doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) program and perceptions of future career plans.
Methods: An online survey of professional year one (P1) through professional year four (P4) students was conducted from 2015 to 2019.
Results: There were a total of 953 non-unique survey respondents.

Objective: This study used a national database to update and examine current differences in men's and women's oral health and oral health behaviours in the United States.
Methods: Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for the 2017-2018 cycle were used to explore the relationship between males and females and their oral health. Multivariate analyses assessed for gender differences in oral health behaviors between genders after controlling for sample demographic characteristics.

Background: Therapeutic trials are critical to improving outcomes for individuals diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Understanding predictors of clinical trial participation could maximize enrollment.
Methods: Data from six sites (Colorado, Iowa, Piedmont region North Carolina, South Carolina, Utah, and western New York) of the Muscular Dystrophy Surveillance, Tracking, and Research Network (MD STAR) were analyzed.

School-based nutrition interventions are used to improve dietary habits of schoolchildren and reverse trends on obesity. This article reports on kindergarten through 12th grade nutrition interventions published between 2009 and 2018 compared with interventions published between 2000 and 2008 based on (1) behaviorally focused, (2) multicomponent, (3) healthful food/school environment (4) family involvement, (5) self-assessments, (6) quantitative evaluation, (7) community involvement, (8) ethnic/heterogeneous groups, (9) multimedia technology, and (10) sequential and sufficient duration. These 10 recommendations help guide educators, researchers, and nutritionists on more effective nutrition interventions.
