Background: Saliva is a protein-rich body fluid for noninvasive discovery of biomolecules, containing both human and microbial components, associated with various chronic diseases. Type-2 diabetes (T2D) imposes a significant health and socio-economic burden. Prior research on T2D salivary microbiome utilized methods such as metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, 16S rRNA sequencing, and low-throughput proteomics.

Helsinki Institute for Demography and Population Health, University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland.

Background: Low family socioeconomic position is a well-established determinant of poor health in youth. Much less is known about the social patterning of youth medication use, and the current evidence is mixed. Furthermore, previous studies have not assessed important confounders of the associations.

Timescale and genetic linkage explain the variable impact of defense systems on horizontal gene transfer.

Prokaryotes have evolved a wide repertoire of defense systems to prevent invasion by mobile genetic elements (MGE). However, because MGE are vehicles for the exchange of beneficial accessory genes, defense systems could consequently impede rapid adaptation in microbial populations. Here, we study how defense systems impact horizontal gene transfer (HGT) in the short and long terms.

Multivariate proteome-wide association study to identify causal proteins for Alzheimer disease.

January 2025

Division of Biostatistics and Health Data Science, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, USA. Electronic address:

Alzheimer disease (AD) is a complex and progressive neurodegenerative disorder that accounts for the majority of individuals with dementia. Here, we aim to identify causal plasma proteins for AD, shedding light on the etiology of AD. We utilized the latest large-scale plasma proteomic data from the UK Biobank Pharma Proteomics Project (UKB-PPP) and AD genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data from the International Genomics of Alzheimer's Project (IGAP).
