Objectives: Drug-induced liver injury accounts for numerous clinically significant events each year and can cause severe injury, resulting in a need for liver transplant or fatality. Liver injury triggered by albendazole is relatively common, resulting in mild to moderate changes in liver enzymes and affecting ~16% of patients who use this medication. Albendazole-induced liver injury and jaundice have been previously documented, but a case of fulminant hepatic failure requiring liver transplant has not yet been described.

Herbal and dietary supplements (HDS) are a common etiology of drug induced liver injury and, specifically, Herbalife® supplements have been implicated. Hepatitis associated aplastic anemia (HAAA) is a rare and potentially fatal complication after acute hepatitis characterized by pancytopenia. While there have been rare cases of HDS leading to HAAA, no cases of Herbalife® induced liver injury leading to HAAA have been reported from this specific HDS.

Hemangiomatosis of the liver is growing in the last decades, because of the abdominal imaging progresses: brain CT scan, MRI. In the presented case, the onset was with symptoms and biochemical disorders characteristic for acute viral hepatitis, with negative serological markers for the A and B hepatitis viruses. The persistence of the clinical symptoms and of the hepatic and biliary retention tests, determined the abdominal echography; which orient the diagnosis to vascular tumour with liver metastasis.

Subfulminant liver failure associated with quetiapine.

Eur J Gastroenterol Hepatol

November 2004

Department of Internal Medicine, American University of Beirut Medical Center, Beirut, Lebanon.

We report the clinical history of a patient with drug induced liver injury due to quetiapine who ultimately developed subfulminant hepatic failure and died. The clinical presentation, laboratory data, as well as liver histopathology were supportive of the putative diagnosis of drug induced liver injury. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the important association between quetiapine and drug induced liver injury.
