Background & Aims: Because tachykinins have been identified as neurotransmitters in the guinea pig colon and human ileum, we examined a possible role of tachykinin receptors and neurokinin (NK) A in neurally induced contraction of human sigmoid colon circular muscle.
Methods: Muscle strips were stimulated electrically for 10 seconds. Single cells were isolated by enzymatic digestion and permeabilized by saponin. [(35)S]GTPgammaS binding was assayed with or without NKA for 5 minutes. Intracellular Ca(2+) was measured using Fura 2.
Results: In the presence of 100 micromol/L L-NNA, 100 micromol/L atropine did not affect electrical field stimulation (EFS)-induced contraction. A peptide NK(2)-receptor antagonist (NK-2ra) but not an NK(1) antagonist FK888 (1 micromol/L) eliminated EFS-induced contraction. NKA-induced contraction in muscle strips and single cells was virtually abolished by NK-2ra, but not by FK888. In permeabilized cells, contraction was blocked by Gq-protein antibodies, but not by other G-protein antibodies, suggesting that NKA activates Gq, which was confirmed by a [(35)S]GTPgammaS binding assay. NKA-induced contraction and increase in cytosolic Ca(2+) were abolished by depletion of intracellular Ca(2+) stores.
Conclusions: Tachykinins may be the main excitatory neurotransmitters in human sigmoid circular muscle. NKA activates Gq-linked NK(2) receptors, which cause Ca(2+) release, followed by contraction.

Recruitment input-output curves of transspinal evoked potentials that represent the net output of spinal neuronal networks during which cortical, spinal and peripheral inputs are integrated as well as motor evoked potentials and H-reflexes are used extensively in research as neurophysiological biomarkers to establish physiological or pathological motor behavior and post-treatment recovery. A comparison between different sigmoidal models to fit the transspinal evoked potentials recruitment curve and estimate the parameters of physiological importance has not been performed. This study sought to address this gap by fitting eight sigmoidal models (Boltzmann, Hill, Log-Logistic, Log-Normal, Weibull-1, Weibull-2, Gompertz, Extreme Value Function) to the transspinal evoked potentials recruitment curves of soleus and tibialis anterior recorded under four different cathodal stimulation settings.

Objective: This study aims to analyze anatomical parameters of the transmission route of sigmoid sinus tinnitus (SST) to explore its mechanism and speculate on possible responsible anatomical abnormalities.
Methods: Clinical data were retrospectively collected from SST and sigmoid sinus wall dehiscence (SSWD) patients suggested by temporal bone high resolution computed tomography (HRCT), with and without tinnitus, at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from January 2015 to August 2022. Patients were divided into SSWD tinnitus ( = 61), and non-tinnitus ( = 60) groups based on HRCT features.

Angiodysplasia is one of the causes of recurrent episodes of lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. Angiodysplasia could be associated with few lesions or multiple diffuse lesions, causing diversity in the clinical presentation of such patients. We report a case of a 19-year-old male presenting with life-threatening gastrointestinal bleeding due to diffuse angiodysplasia of the bowel extending from the jejunum to the sigmoid colon and requiring multiple investigations and management.

The purpose of the current study was to determine the angulation of the dural venous sinuses in soft tissue, to evaluate differences between types of tissue, and to discuss the potential influence of these angulations on intracranial venous hemodynamics and related pathologies. Angulations formed in different segments of the transverse, sigmoid, and superior sagittal sinuses were measured in 13 adult human cadaveric heads (26 sides). After the soft tissues were removed, measurements were also taken from the underlying bone.

Objective: To investigate the efficacy of laparoscopic sigmoid extraperitoneal colostomy combined with pelvic peritoneal closure in abdominoperineal resection for low rectal cancer.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 162 patients with low rectal cancer, who underwent laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection from January 2015 to January 2019 at the Affiliated Peace Hospital of Changzhi Medical College. Extraperitoneal stoma construction was performed in 98 patients (study group), while 64 patients (control group) underwent the procedure without suturing the pelvic peritoneum.
