Changes in the properties of the skin barrier should have correlates in the physiological status of the differentiating epidermal cells. However, the quantitative distributions of physiologically important elements and trace elements of the skin has been a neglected area of research for lack of tools to investigate this highly differentiated tissue. With the event of the particle probes, the electron microprobe and the scanning proton microprobe, it has become possible to investigate different aspects of normal skin physiology as well as pathophysiological processes. In addition penetration profiles of allergenic metals can be demonstrated with the trace element sensitive proton probe. Future approaches to the study of skin physiology in normal and pathological conditions should incorporate other techniques including immunological and biochemical tagging of particular cells to achieve a broad basis for interpretations of data.

Purpose: Corticosteroids are recommended as a first-line treatment for idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM), a disease that usually occurs in young women. Corticosteroid phobia is a fear of corticosteroids and one of the main reasons for poor treatment compliance. Despite the increasing recognition of corticosteroid phobia, there has been a lack of studies on this issue in IGM.

Purpose: Allergic diseases have escalated to epidemic levels worldwide, impacting nearly 30% of the global population. Fungi are a significant source of allergens responsible for up to 6% of respiratory diseases in the general population. However, the specific cause of respiratory allergies often remains unidentified.

Urban air pollutants, mainly represented by PM containing organic and inorganic substances, can penetrate the human skin and trigger oxidative stress, potentially causing skin barrier damage and aging. κ-Carrageenan oligosaccharides as degradation products of natural sulfated polysaccharide have a great potential for skin moisturization as well as improving oxidative stress and inflammation. In this study, κ-carrageenan tetrasaccharide was obtained by enzymatic digestion of κ-carrageenan, and its role in alleviating particulate matter-induced inflammatory response in HaCaT keratinocyte cell line and skin barrier dysfunction was evaluated.

Objective: To measure the prevalence of antibiotic use in dogs and cats, identify the most common antibiotic drugs prescribed, and determine the most common indications for use.
Methods: Point-prevalence survey methodology was used to collect antibiotic prescribing data for cats and dogs from 1 practice day in 2021 at nonacademic primary care and referral practices in the US.
Results: 52 practices participated, comprising records for 2,599 dogs and cats.
