The results presented suggest a modulating effect of protein S100b on the course of inflammation in the cornea. In the presence of this protein, secretion of proteoglycans and collagen increases, their interrelationship is restored and tissue specificity of extracellular matrix is ensured, which allows preservation of the cornea transparency. Protein S100b appears to be a promising drug for ophthalmology, especially after refractional surgery on the cornea.
