Three new silicon-bearing radicals of astrophysical interest, SiCCH and the two nearly isoenergetic isomers SiCN and SiNC, were detected in a laboratory discharge in their X2Pi ground states by Fourier transform microwave and millimeter-wave absorption spectroscopy. Hyperfine structure was observed in the low rotational transitions of the (2)Pi(1/2) ladder, and well-resolved Lambda-doubling was observed in both fine-structure ladders. With the spectroscopic constants derived from the laboratory measurements, the spectra of all three can be calculated to an uncertainty of less than 0.1 km s(-1) in equivalent radial velocity over the entire range of interest to radio astronomers. SiCN, with a dipole moment of 2.9 D, is probably the most promising of the three for astronomical discovery.

Study of the X̃2Π state of the SiCN/SiNC Renner-Teller system.

J Chem Phys

March 2013

Université Paris-Est, Laboratoire Modélisation et Simulation Multi Echelle, MSME UMR 8208 CNRS, 5 bd Descartes, 77454 Marne-la-Vallée, France.

The potential energy surfaces of both components of the X̃(2)Π electronic ground state of the double Renner-Teller SiCN/SiNC system are calculated using explicitly correlated coupled cluster approach. The SiNC minimum is found to lie at 628 cm(-1) above the SiCN one. The isomerization transition state is found at 7583 cm(-1) on the (2)A' surface and at 7936 cm(-1) on the (2)A(") surface.

Singlet excited states of silicon-containing anions relevant to interstellar chemistry.

J Phys Chem A

July 2011

Department of Chemistry, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia 24061, USA.

As the number of anions detected in the interstellar medium (ISM) increases, knowledge of their chemical properties is crucial in expanding our understanding of the chemistry of space. In this work we build on a previous study done in our group to examine the excited-state properties of five anions likely to exist in the ISM: SiCCN(-), CSiCN(-), CCSiN(-), SiCN(-), and SiNC(-). Our coupled cluster results indicate that SiCCN(-) and SiNC(-) possess dipole-bound singlet excited states while SiCCN(-) also has one valence state and CCSiN(-) potentially has two.

Study of absorption spectra and (hyper)polarizabilities of SiC(n) and Si(n)C (n=2-6) clusters using density functional response approach.

J Chem Phys

We theoretically investigate the absorption spectra, dipole polarizabilities, and first-order hyperpolarizabilities of SiC(n) and Si(n)C (n=2-6) clusters using the density functional response approach. Similar to other semiconductor clusters such as Si and gallium arsenide (GaAs) clusters, the absorption spectra of the SiC(n) and Si(n)C clusters show long absorption tails in the low-transition-energy region and strong absorption peaks in the high-transition-energy region (>4.0 eV).

Ion-molecule reaction mechanism of SiCN+/SiNC+ + HX (X = H, CH3, F, OH, NH2).

J Phys Chem A

In contrast to the abundant data on the neutral-neutral reactions, little is known about the ion-molecule reactions involving silicon ions. A detailed mechanistic study at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) and CCSD(T)/6-311+G(2df,p) (single-point) computational levels was reported for the reactions of SiCN+/SiNC+ with a series of -bonded molecules HX (X = H, CH3, F, NH2). Together with the recently studied SiCN+/SiNC+ + H2O reactions, all of these reactions have nucleophilic substitution as their major pathway.

Theoretical mechanistic study on the ion-molecule reaction of SiCN+/SiNC+ with H2O.

The gas-phase ion-molecule reactions play very important roles in interstellar and in plasma chemistry. Motivated by recent astrophysical detection of the SiCN/SiNC radicals and laboratory characterization of some SiCN-containing species, we carried out a detailed potential energy survey on the SiCN+/SiNC(+) + H2O reaction at the Becke's three-parameter Lee-Yang-Parr-B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) and coupled cluster with single, double, and triple excitations-CCSD(T)/6-311 + G(2df,p) (single-point) levels as an attempt towards understanding the SiCN+/SiNC+ reaction mechanisms. In contrast to the carbene-featured analogous CCN+/CNC(+) + H2X (X=O,S) reactions, the title reaction SiCN+/SiNC(+) + H2O are not associated with any competitive silylene-insertion characters.
