Implementing biomonitoring programs for assessing the impact of microplastic ingestion on marine organisms is a priority to verify the effectiveness of measures adopted by legislative frameworks to deal with plastic pollution. At the European level, the Marine Strategy Framework Directive mandates Member States to establish a unified monitoring approach. However, due to the vast range and differences in marine regions, the selection of bioindicators must be tailored locally.

Introduction: Bronchoscopy is of great significance in diagnosing and treating respiratory illness. Using deep learning, a diagnostic system for bronchoscopy images can improve the accuracy of tracheal, bronchial, and pulmonary disease diagnoses for physicians and ensure timely pathological or etiological examinations for patients. Improving the diagnostic accuracy of the algorithms remains the key to this technology.

Trust edges up-slightly.

Science

November 2024

H. Holden Thorp Editor-in-Chief, Science journals.

The Pew Research Center survey on trust in science and researchers is eagerly awaited every year by science policy experts and communicators. This year's results, released last week, give a small, but meaningful, reason to be optimistic: Trust in scientists, which took a substantial hit during the pandemic, is starting to recover. The survey, conducted in October 2024 with 9593 adults across the United States, estimates that 76% of Americans now have a great deal or fair amount of confidence in scientists to act in the public's best interests.

Machine learning-based real-time anomaly detection using data pre-processing in the telemetry of server farms.

Sci Rep

October 2024

Department of Networked Systems and Services, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Magyar tudósok krt. 2, 1117, Budapest, Hungary.

Fast and accurate anomaly detection is critical in telemetry systems because it helps operators take appropriate actions in response to abnormal behaviours. However, recent techniques are accurate but not fast enough to deal with real-time data. There is a need to reduce the anomaly detection time, which motivates us to propose two new algorithms called AnDePeD (Anomaly Detector on Periodic Data) and AnDePed Pro.

Multi-dimensional perspectives into the pervasive role of microbial extracellular polymeric substances in electron transport processes.

Sci Total Environ

November 2024

State Key Laboratory of Urban Water Resource and Environment, School of Environment, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, Heilongjiang Province 150090, China. Electronic address:

During the process of biological treatment, most microorganisms are encapsulated in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which protect the cell from adverse environments and aid in microbial attachment. Microorganisms utilize extracellular electron transfer (EET) for energy and information interchange with other cells and the outside environment. Understanding the role of steric EPS in EET is critical for studying microbiology and utilizing microorganisms in biogeochemical processes, pollutant transformation, and bioenergy generation.
