Published: August 2000

CT and MR findings were retrospectively reviewed in 12 patients with germ cell tumors originating from the non-pineal regions. Cystic or necrotic components were seen in 6 patients. Of 4 germinomas, 2 showed mixed density on the CT. The MR signal intensity of the tumor was non-specific. Of 8 germinomas, 4 were inhomogeneously enhanced on postcontrast CT and T1-weighted MR images. CT and MR features of germinomas originating from non-pineal regions frequently differ from those of germinomas originating from the pineal region. The mass of the tumor often appeared cystic and inhomogeneously enhanced following contrast infusion.

Introduction: Pineal tumours (PTs) are rare and histologically variable. Serum melatonin is a well-known product of this gland, albeit with uncertain clinical implications vis-à-vis its utility as a potential tumour marker. In particular, the temporal profile of serum melatonin during the disease course remains unclear and infrequently studied.

Background: Supratentorial PNET (sPNET) are rare CNS tumors of embryonal origin arising in children and adults. The treatment of sPNET for all age groups at our cancer center has been based on the management of medulloblastoma (MB), involving neurosurgical debulking followed by cranio-spinal irradiation (CSI) and systemic chemotherapy.

Methods: Medical records were reviewed to gather demographic and clinical data about all embryonal CNS tumors in children and adults from 2001 to 2007.

Benign fibrous histiocytomas (BFHs) are tumors with fibroblastic and histiocytic components without histological anaplasia. Intracerebral lesions are exceptional and to our knowledge a spinal location was not yet described. We describe 2 cases of BFHs of the neural axis: the first, a 22-month-old boy with Down's syndrome, presented with a paraparesis and the magnetic resonance (MR) of the spine disclosed an intradural extramedullary, thoracic mass, totally resected; the second, a 13-year-old boy with left partial motor seizures, in whom the MR of the brain showed an intracerebral, right frontal tumor, also surgically removed.

Circadian rhythms of body temperature, activity and oxygen consumption were recorded in the nine-banded armadillo, Dasypus novemcinctus, a mammal lacking a distinct pineal gland. The rhythms were entrained by light-dark cycles and appeared to be phase-coupled. Under constant illumination, the animals displayed free-running circadian rhythms with period lengths of slightly less than 24 hr.
