Enhanced Stability and Sensitivity for CA-125 Detection Under Microfluidic Shear Flow Using Polyethylene Glycol-Coated Biosensor.

ACS Omega

January 2025

Advanced Energy Systems and Microdevices Laboratory, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Newark, New Jersey 07102, United States.

The microfluidic-based point-of-care (POC) diagnostic tool has garnered significant interest in recent years, offering rapid and cost-effective disease detection. There is a growing trend toward integrating microfluidic platforms with biosensors, aligning lab-on-a-chip technologies with POC diagnostic devices. Despite numerous efforts to incorporate biosensors into microfluidic systems, researchers have performed very limited investigations on the stability of biomarker detection when biosensors operate under microfluidic shear flow conditions.

Soluble ST2 (sST2) is released in response to vascular congestion, inflammation, and pro-fibrotic stimuli. In heart failure (HF), elevated levels of sST2 are associated with a higher risk of adverse clinical outcomes. Emerging evidence suggests that carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) may act as a ligand that modulates the inflammatory response.

Introduction: Adaptive ChemoTherapy for Ovarian cancer (ACTOv) is a phase II, multicentre, randomised controlled trial, evaluating an adaptive therapy (AT) regimen with carboplatin in women with relapsed, platinum-sensitive high-grade serous or high-grade endometrioid cancer of the ovary, fallopian tube and peritoneum whose disease has progressed at least 6 months after day 1 of the last cycle of platinum-based chemotherapy. AT is a novel, evolutionarily informed approach to cancer treatment, which aims to exploit intratumoral competition between drug-sensitive and drug-resistant tumour subpopulations by modulating drug dose according to a patient's own response to the last round of treatment. ACTOv is the first clinical trial of AT in this disease setting.

Background: Biomarkers that change in response to nintedanib in subjects with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) would be valuable. We investigated the effects of nintedanib on circulating biomarkers in subjects with IPF in the INMARK trial.

Methods: Subjects with IPF were randomised 1:2 to receive nintedanib 150 mg twice daily or placebo for 12 weeks, after which all patients received open-label nintedanib for 40 weeks.

Systemic inflammatory indices as a non-invasive grading modality for endometriosis: a comparative study versus exploratory laparoscopy.

Rev Bras Ginecol Obstet

December 2024

Benha University Faculty of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Benha Egypt Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, Benha University, Benha, Egypt.

Objective: Included evaluation of the possibility of using the systemic inflammatory indices for preoperative screening for the presence and severity of endometriosis (EM) in comparison to the findings of the exploratory laparoscopy.

Methods: 88 women with clinical manifestations suggestive of EM were evaluated clinically and by US and gave blood samples for estimation of serum cancer antigen-125 (CA125), platelet and total and differential leucocytic counts for calculation of inflammatory indices; the Systemic Immune-Inflammation index, the Systemic Inflammation Response Index (SIRI), the Neutrophil-Lymphocyte ratio (NLR), the Neutrophil-Monocyte ratio, the Neutrophil-Platelet ratio and the Platelet-Lymphocyte ratio. Then, patients were prepared to undergo laparoscopy for diagnosis and staging.
