Hyaluronic acid (HA), a vital polysaccharide naturally present in human tissues, is widely utilized in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries due to its diverse functionalities and bioactivity. Rapid and accurate quantification of HA is essential for the quality control of its products. Enzymatic quantification methods, known for their simplicity and high specificity, were employed for polysaccharide measurement.

Enteropathogenic (EPEC) strains are subdivided into typical (tEPEC) and atypical (aEPEC) according to the presence or absence of a virulence-associated plasmid called pEAF. Our research group has previously demonstrated that two aEPEC strains, 0421-1 and 3991-1, induce an increase in mucus production in a rabbit ileal loop model . This phenomenon was not observed with a tEPEC prototype strain.

Mucosal infections normally cause an immune response including activation of antigen-specific B cells in regional mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue. After recirculation of plasmablasts, and maturation at mucosal surfaces or bone marrow, plasma cells produce secretory or systemic IgA. It remains uncertain to what extent secretory and systemic IgA share the same target specificities.

Clostridium perfringens, an opportunistic pathogen, produces mu-toxin hyaluronidases including endo-β-N-acetylglucosaminidases (Nags) as a virulence invasion factor. To clarify an intrinsic factor for degradation of host extracellular hyaluronan, we focused on hyaluronate lyase (HysA), distinct from endo-β-N-acetylglucosaminidases. C.
