Native "Vitaflon" vascular graft made of spongeous polytetrafluoroethylene for portocaval shunt was evaluated in patients with portal hypertension. Experimental series in grey rabbits proved high biological inertness of the graft. It was used for portocaval shunt in 13 patients. The follow-up from 1 to 32 months demonstrated successful results in 12 cases.

Background Aims: In clinical practice, the reduction of porto-caval pressure gradient (PCPG) following trans-jugular intra-hepatic porto-systemic shunt (TIPS) does not always meet the recommendation of current guidance. We evaluated the impact of different degrees of PCPG reduction, measured at the end of an elective TIPS, on ascites control, recurrence of portal hypertension-related bleeding (PHRB) and survival.
Approach And Results: Cirrhotic patients receiving TIPS for refractory ascites (RA) or for the secondary prophylaxis of PHRB were consecutively enrolled.

Purpose: This study aimed to explore a modified direct intrahepatic portocaval shunt (DIPS) technique as an alternative approach for patients with portal vein occlusion (PVO) and cirrhosis who were not candidates for traditional transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) due to anatomical challenges.
Technique: Three patients with esophageal or gastric fundus variceal hemorrhage complicated by severe PVO were treated using innovative DIPS approaches. Preoperative contrast-enhanced computed tomography was employed to assess anatomical feasibility.

Abernethy syndrome is a rare congenital vascular anomaly. In this condition, blood from the portal system is diverted to the caval system through a portocaval shunt, entirely or partially bypassing the liver. Prevalence figures in the literature range from 1 per 30000 population up to 1 per 50000 population.

A 3-year-old crossbreed dog (case 1) and a 3-month-old German Shorthaired Pointer (case 2) were presented for acute signs of encephalopathy. A portosystemic shunt (PSS) was suspected based on clinical context and laboratory exam results and was confirmed on computed tomography (CT) angiography in both cases. A left-sided azygos (case 1) and right-sided azygos (case 2) continuation of an interrupted caudal vena cava (CVC) and a situs ambiguous (SA) were also observed and considered as incidental findings.
