This paper reports on an interpretative research study that set out to develop a rich description of patients' experiences of the process of preparing for and receiving a blood transfusion. The themes of information-giving and receiving; reactions, both physical and emotional; and the care and treatment participants received through the experience are presented.

Uncontrolled bleeding is the commonest preventable cause of death after traumatic injury. Hemostatic resuscitation is the foundation of contemporary transfusion practice for traumatic bleeding and has 2 main aims: to immediately support the circulating blood volume and to treat/prevent the associated trauma-induced coagulopathy.
