A new class of glutathione transferases has been discovered by analysis of the expressed sequence tag data base and sequence alignment. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) of the new class, named Omega, exist in several mammalian species and Caenorhabditis elegans. In humans, GSTO 1-1 is expressed in most tissues and exhibits glutathione-dependent thiol transferase and dehydroascorbate reductase activities characteristic of the glutaredoxins. The structure of GSTO 1-1 has been determined at 2.0-A resolution and has a characteristic GST fold (Protein Data Bank entry code ). The Omega class GSTs exhibit an unusual N-terminal extension that abuts the C terminus to form a novel structural unit. Unlike other mammalian GSTs, GSTO 1-1 appears to have an active site cysteine that can form a disulfide bond with glutathione.

Personal care products (PCPs), such as sunscreens, are usually found in various aquatic ecosystems at low concentrations (ng l to µg l). However, there is limited information regarding their effects on marine bivalves. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the sublethal effects of environmental concentrations (1 and 100 µg l) of benzophenone-3 (BP-3) in Crassostrea gigas oysters after 1 and 7 days of exposure.

Ozone (O) is an oxidative air pollutant that affects plant growth. Moringa oleifera is a tree species distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions. This species presents high morphological plasticity, which increases its ability to tolerate stressful conditions, but with no O risk assessment calculated so far.

The aim of the present study was to identify and validate the biological significance of new genes/proteins involved in the development of allergic airway disease in a murine asthma model. Gene microarrays were used to identify genes with at least a two-fold increase in gene expression in lungs of two separate mouse strains with high and low allergic susceptibility. Validation of mRNA data was obtained by western blotting and immunohistochemistry, followed by functional analysis of one of the identified genes in mice with targeted disruption of specific gene expression.

The class of Omega glutathione transferases is newly identified with novel structural and functional characteristics. Human GSTO 1-1 (glutathione S-transferase Omega 1) is the first member of the GST Omega class. It was found to play a role in apoptosis and be in association with age-at-onset of AD and PD.
