Published: June 2000

Formation of pyrogallol ether during thermal oxidation of oak (Quercus iberica L.) lignin in the presence of air oxygen was investigated. A model reaction demonstrated that the substance identified by us as pyrogallol ether (1,2-dioxy-3-methoxybenzene) is derived from syringic aldehyde.

A Novel Two-Domain Laccase with Middle Redox Potential: Physicochemical and Structural Properties.

Biochemistry (Mosc)

October 2023

Federal Research Center "Pushchino Scientific Center for Biological Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences", Skryabin Institute of Biochemistry and Physiology of Microorganisms of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Pushchino, Moscow Region, 142290, Russia.

The gene for a previously unexplored two-domain laccase was identified in the genome of actinobacterium Streptomyces carpinensis VKM Ac-1300. The two-domain laccase, named ScaSL, was produced in a heterologous expression system (Escherichia coli strain M15 [pREP4]). The enzyme was purified to homogeneity using affinity chromatography.

Spray coatings have shown promising potential in preventing the uptake of smoke phenols from wildfires into wine grapes. Three cellulose nanofiber-based coatings with low methoxyl pectin or varying concentrations of chitosan were made into films and their potential for blocking, absorption, or adsorption of phenols (guaiacol, -cresol, and syringol) was evaluated using a custom-built smoke diffusion box. The coatings were also applied to Pinot noir grapes in a vineyard.

Article Synopsis
  • - Methoxyphenols and nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) are harmful to both the atmosphere and human health, primarily emitted from the incomplete combustion of solid fuels, with their formation also influenced by photochemical reactions.
  • - A study using a potential aerosol mass-oxidation flow reactor found that emission factors for these compounds varied widely among different solid fuels, affected by factors like volatile matter and combustion conditions.
  • - Guaiacol and 4-nitro-2-vinylphenol were identified as tracers for organic aerosols, revealing that while biomass burning emitted more fresh guaiacol than coal, its aged emissions were similar, suggesting guaiacol may not be the most reliable biomass marker.

Hydrothermal carbonization coupled with fast pyrolysis of almond shells: Valorization and production of valuable chemicals.

Waste Manag

September 2023

Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Castilla -La Mancha, Avda. Camilo José Cela 12, 13071 Ciudad Real, Spain. Electronic address:

In this study, it was found that hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) can be an effective method for almond shell (AS) valorization. The severity of HTC treatment had a significant effect on hydrochar yields, with higher severity promoting carbonization but reducing yields. Furthermore, the work found that HTC treatment effectively demineralized biomass samples by removing inorganic material that could catalyze carbonization.

π-π stack driven competitive /complementary adsorption of aromatic compounds on MIL-53(Al).

Chemosphere

October 2023

Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Ecological Remediation for Industrial Agglomeration Area, College of Environment and Energy, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, 510006, China. Electronic address:

In this study, the selective adsorption of aromatic compounds on mesoporous MIL-53(Al) was investigated, and followed the order: Biphenyl (Biph) > Triclosan (TCS) > Bisphenol A (BPA) > Pyrogallol (Pyro) > Catechol (Cate) > Phenol (Phen), and exhibited high selectivity toward TCS in binary compounds. In addition to hydrophobicity and hydrogen bonding, π-π interaction/stacking predominated, and more evidently with double benzene rings. TCS-containing halogens could increase π interaction on the benzene rings via forming Cl-π stacking with MIL-53(Al).
