Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) affects rodents' stress-related behaviors, such as anxiety-like behavior or fear conditioning. However, previous studies have investigated the effect of intracerebroventricular, but not hippocampal, injection of this PAC1R-selective antagonist (PACAP-6-38) on anxiety-like behavior. However, it has been reported that administration of PACAP-6-38 to the dorsal hippocampus reduces the fear response in a fear conditioning test.

The functional significance of brain asymmetry is still largely unknown. Studying the level of correlation of neuropeptide-degrading activities between subcellular fractions such as synaptosomal, of the left and right hemispheres of male rats during development and aging could provide relevant data on their functional role during these periods. The present study analyzes the level of correlation of a enkephalin- or angiotensin III-degrading activity, such as membrane-bound arginyl-aminopeptidase activity (M-B ArgAP) between the left versus right homogenate and/or synaptosomal subcellular fractions obtained and processed independently from both brain hemispheres during development and aging.

In the face of constantly changing environments, the central nervous system (CNS) rapidly and accurately calculates the body's needs, regulates feeding behavior, and maintains energy homeostasis. The arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (ARC) plays a key role in this process, serving as a critical brain region for detecting nutrition-related hormones and regulating appetite and energy homeostasis. Agouti-related protein (AgRP)/neuropeptide Y (NPY) neurons in the ARC are core elements that interact with other brain regions through a complex appetite-regulating network to comprehensively control energy homeostasis.
