Introduction: The prevalence of hereditary ataxia in Holguín, Cuba, is 43 per 100,000 inhabitants, but in some regions reaches 503 per 100,000 inhabitants, a figure never previously recorded in the international literature.
Objectives: To evaluate the part played by non-cerebellar structures and vias in causing some of the clinical signs of the disorder by means of clinico-electro physiological correlation.
Patients And Methods: A neurological examination, peripheral nerve conduction studies and somato-sensorial evoked potentials of the median and posterior tibial nerves were done in 70 patients with type 2 spinocerebellar ataxia.
Results: The commonest clinical signs were ataxia on walking, dysarthria, dysmetria and adiadochokinesia. Correlation analysis showed that the variable most significantly correlated with the degree of ataxia and Romberg's sign was latency of the P40 component, whilst tendon reflexes were best correlated with H reflex latency. However, the duration of the disease was not found to have statistical correlation.
Conclusions: These results suggest that degeneration of long peripheral nerves and sensory paths contributes to the degree of ataxia and other clinical signs. At present no correlation has been found between the duration of the illness and increasing electrophysiological changes, and therefore seems not to have a major effect on neurodegenerative mechanisms.

The tRNA-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs) are a new class of non coding RNAs, which are stable in body fluids and can be used as potential biomarkers for disease diagnosis. However, the exact value of tsRNAs in the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) is still unclear. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the performance of the serum tsRNAs biosignature to distinguish between active TB, healthy controls, latent TB infection, and other respiratory diseases.

We have attempted to provide an evidence-based medicine protocol for the conservative treatment of KOA. Researchers collected and compared randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that used microfragmented adipose tissue and platelet-rich plasma to treat knee osteoarthritis.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAvascular necrosis (AVN) is a known complication during the management of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). It has the potential to alter the growth of the head or acetabulum and prevent the best outcomes. While past literature has evaluated the risks of AVN and strategies to avoid it, studies on the impact of AVN on the outcomes are scarce.

However, the other studies regarding this topic had reported contradictory results. Therefore, we conducted this meta-analysis to compare the clinical results and other parameters between total hip arthroplasty following pelvic osteotomy and primary total hip arthroplasty.

It was hypothesized that patients treated with BCR prostheses would present higher flexion and better clinical and functional results than those treated with PS implants. This prospective study included thirty-two patients treated for primary knee osteoarthritis and assigned to two matched groups for their demographic characteristics and comorbidities.
