Rat LH (rLH) and FSH (rFSH) were measured by sensitive and specific competition ELISAs. The rat LH ELISA used rLH-I-9 coated plates, an antiserum against rLH and an antibody against rabbit IgG labeled with peroxidase. Using rLH-RP-3 as a standard, rat LH was determined by binding of the anti-LH antibody to rLH-I-9 coated plates. The sensitivity of the assay was 0.8 ng/mL. Similarly, the rat FSH-ELISA used rFSH-I-8 coated plates, an antiserum against rFSH and an antibody against rabbit IgG labeled with peroxidase. Using rFSH-RP-3 as a standard, the FSH-ELISA was also determined by binding of the anti-FSH antibody to rFSH-I-8 coated plates. The sensitivity of this assay was 1.25 ng/mL. Both rat LH and FSH ELISA assays are highly specific and provide accurate determination of gonadotrophins in buffers, sera, cell culture media, and anterior pituitary extracts. These assays were used for monitoring the gonadotrophin surge-attenuating factor (GnSAF) and inhibin activities present in human follicular fluid (hFF). The 2 new ELISA procedures have practical advantages (safety, convenience, economy) over the RIA methods, and they perform as well as the RIA techniques at the same range of concentrations.

Alginate Hydrogel Beads with a Leakproof Gold Shell for Ultrasound-Triggered Release.

Pharmaceutics

January 2025

Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Minnesota, 7-105 Hasselmo Hall, 312 Church Street SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455, USA.

Focused ultrasound has advantages as an external stimulus for drug delivery as it is non-invasive, has high precision and can penetrate deep into tissues. Here, we report a gold-plated alginate (ALG) hydrogel system that retains highly water-soluble small-molecule fluorescein for sharp off/on release after ultrasound exposure. The ALG is crosslinked into beads with calcium chloride and layered with a polycation to adjust the surface charge for the adsorption of catalytic platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs).

Aluminum and its alloys are widely used in the busbar structures of electrolytic aluminum production. However, they are prone to corrosion and wear damage during use, leading to a decline in current-transmission efficiency and potentially causing safety issues. To repair damaged aluminum busbars, this paper explores the feasibility of using cold spraying technology for surface restoration.

Embedding stacked HTS tapes into twisted slots is one design approach for constructing fusion conductors. This paper adopts a Cable-in-Conduit Conductor (CICC) structure, utilizing commercially REBCO coated conductors. The cable framework is made of copper and features six helically twisted slots filled with 2G HTS tapes.

Hypothesis: We hypothesise that superhydrophobic surfaces can achieve effective interfacial slip and drag reduction even under non-Newtonian, shear-thinning fluid flows. Unlike Newtonian fluids, where slip is primarily influenced by viscosity and surface tension, we anticipate that the shear-thinning nature of these fluids may enhance slip length and drag reduction.

Experiments And Numerical Analysis: The superhydrophobic surfaces used in this study, featuring a dual-scale random topography, were fabricated via a spray coating process, and low-concentration xanthan gum solutions (50-250 ppm) were used as model shear-thinning fluids of low elasticity.

Foamy Melamine Resin-Silica Aerogel Composite-Derived Thermal Insulation Coating.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of High-Performance Civil Engineering Materials, Jiangsu Sobute New Materials Co., Ltd., Nanjing 210008, China.

A novel class of SiO aerogel-based resin composite with a self-formed foamy structure and an extremely low thermal conductivity, as well as excellent fire resistance, was fabricated via a room temperature and atmospheric pressure route. The self-formed foamy structure was achieved by utilizing SiO aerogel particles not only as a thermal insulative functional additive filler but also as nano-sized solid particles in a Picking emulsion system, adjusting the surface tension as a stabilizer at the interface between the two immiscible phases (liquid and air in this case). The results of foamy structure analyses via scanning electron microscopy, micro-CT, and N adsorption-desorption isotherms validate the successful generation of a micro-scale porous structure with the enhancement of the aerogel nano-scale solid particles at the wall as a stabilizer.
