To study the effect of positive airway pressure (Paw) on the pressure gradient for venous return [the difference between mean systemic filling pressure (Pms) and right atrial pressure (Pra)], we investigated 10 patients during general anesthesia for implantation of defibrillator devices. Paw was varied under apnea from 0 to 15 cmH(2)O, which increased Pra from 7.3 +/- 3.1 to 10.0 +/- 2.3 mmHg and decreased left ventricular stroke volume by 23 +/- 22%. Episodes of ventricular fibrillation, induced for defibrillator testing, were performed during 0- and 15-cmH(2)O Paw to measure Pms (value of Pra 7.5 s after onset of circulatory arrest). Positive Paw increased Pms from 10.2 +/- 3.5 to 12.7 +/- 3.2 mmHg, and thus the pressure gradient for venous return (Pms - Pra) remained unchanged. Echocardiography did not reveal signs of vascular collapse of the inferior and superior vena cava due to lung expansion. In conclusion, we demonstrated that positive Paw equally increases Pra and Pms in humans and alters venous return without changes in the pressure gradient (Pms - Pra).

This case report presents the use of intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) in a 68-year-old woman with disabling bilateral claudication owing to a heavily calcified subocclusive stenosis of the infrarenal aorta. The patient had a history of tobacco use, dyslipidemia, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, with absent femoral pulses and severe arterial calcification. A 12-mm Shockwave L6 lithotripsy catheter was employed to treat the aortic lesion, resulting in a significant decrease in the aortic pressure gradient without the need for stenting.

Background: Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (SICH) is the second most common cause of cerebrovascular disease after ischemic stroke, with high mortality and disability rates, imposing a significant economic burden on families and society. This retrospective study aimed to develop and evaluate an interpretable machine learning model to predict functional outcomes 3 months after SICH.
Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on clinical data from 380 patients with SICH who were hospitalized at three different centers between June 2020 and June 2023.

This study evaluated transcatheter approach for relieving right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) obstruction using combined non-compliant balloon dilatation of the RVOT and conal artery occlusion in patients with Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), both uncorrected and post-intra-cardiac repair (ICR) restenosis. A prospective study was conducted from January 2022 to June 2023, including 40 symptomatic patients aged over 12 years with RVOT obstruction in TOF. Exclusion criteria included moderate to severe pulmonary regurgitation.

Hyphae are viscoelastic tubes whose internal pressure pushes the cell membrane against the inner surface of the cell wall. Catalytic yielding of the wall allows this turgor to force its polymers apart as new materials are added to the surface of the growing tip. Turgor drops slightly as the wall expands, creating a pressure gradient that causes the cytoplasm to flow toward the tip.

Non-invasive estimation of pressure differences using 2D synthetic aperture ultrasound imaging offers a precise, low-cost, and risk-free diagnostic tool. Unlike invasive techniques, this preserves natural blood flow and avoids the limitations of devices that occupy lumen space. This paper evaluates a previously published estimator, modified to incorporate Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) echo-cancellation, using data from ten healthy volunteers and one patient.
